in the thoroughbred, vineyard and coal-belt of the Upper Hunter Valley, in the small but significant town of Murrurundi, the gallery is an accessible drive from Moree, Armidale, Tamworth, Scone and Newcastle. In late 2017, Michael Reid Murrurundi expanded into a new exhibition space constructed adjacent to the original gallery and the homestead Bobadil House (1842). Drawing on the history of Bobadil House as a working colonial inn, the Sydney and Scone based architects Dods and Zuccon conceived the new gallery as a large agricultural ‘outbuilding’ designed to complement the existing late-Georgian sandstone structures. With the addition of the new gallery, the old gallery housed in the former convict cellblock was turned over to our coffeehouse and retail space. Over the last two years, the Murrurundi gallery has extended its own retail brand, Big Brown Dog. With online sales booming and the range of Big Brown Dog products constantly broadening, to include everything from candles to clothing, Michael Reid Murrurundi has grown ever greater. OPEN Thursday - Sunday: 9:30am - 4pm (Kiosk closes at 3pm)

ON VIEW: BROOKE DALTON | ‘Habitus’ | Until 16 August | Michael Reid Murrurundi

Continuing this week at Michael Reid Murrurundi, ‘Habitus’ is the latest exhibition by Narrabri-based artist BROOKE DALTON, who has amassed a passionate following among art and design lovers for the decorative flair, eclectic panache and infectious joie de vivre with which she paints spaces shaped by memory, collecting and everyday ritual.

Richly expressive and alive with colour, her new series of tablescapes and interior scenes can now be explored and acquired online and at the gallery. Working with loose, energetic brushwork that perfectly matches the maximalist exuberance of the interiors she depicts, Dalton conjures rooms that feel both deeply personal and universally inviting.

Abundant tableaux, overflowing bookshelves, fresh-cut flowers, collected curios and prints-on-prints collide in warmly raucous, colour-soaked compositions that celebrate the pleasures of living among beautiful, well-loved things. Bursts of lush greens, rosy pinks and rich blues enliven vases brimming with blooms, while every surface hums with the traces of lives thoughtfully lived and lovingly arranged.

A joyous celebration of home as a place of creativity, comfort and self-expression, ‘Habitus’ finds Dalton further refining the distinctive visual language that has made her one of the most sought-after painters to exhibit regularly at Michael Reid Murrurundi.

COMING SOON: JO WHITE | ‘Paintings of Light’ | 6–31 August | Michael Reid Murrurundi

Michael Reid Murrurundi is delighted to announce our next solo exhibition by Armidale-based painter JO WHITE, whose new series, ‘Paintings of Light’, sees one of our most distinctive and admired chroniclers of suburban and regional Australian life turn her attention to the after-hours world between dusk and dawn.

Recognised for her luminous portrayals of quintessentially Australian settings basking beneath brilliant daylight skies, White’s night moves now find a different kind of luminosity, as humming neon signs, parked cars, takeaway shops and warmly lit windows become unlikely protagonists across a suite of cinematic nocturnes.

Set beneath deep, velvety blue-black skies familiar to anyone who has watched evening settle over a country town, White’s new paintings reveal an Australia transformed by nightfall. As the harsher daylight recedes, fluorescent signs beckon from roadside kebab stands and service stations, living room windows glow behind weatherboard facades and the last traces of sunset dissolve into hazy horizons. Familiar landmarks assume an altogether different character, yet remain animated by the irreverent wit, affectionate observation and eye for vernacular detail that have long distinguished White’s practice.

“Somewhere between the city and the outback, whether it be a country town or the outer suburbs, there’s a real connection a lot of us can latch onto,” says White in a recent profile published by Country Style. “The beautiful, iconic imagery of farming and woolsheds has been built up to be typical of what Australia is, and it’s definitely there, but equally there is this suburban landscape that resonates with so many of us.”

‘Paintings of Light’ marks a compelling new chapter in the practice of an artist who continues to find wonder, humour and strange beauty in the everyday – now transformed after dark. To register your interest and receive previews of available works, please email [email protected].

This weekend at Michael Reid Murrurundi, we are delighted to present ‘Habitus’ – a vibrant new solo exhibition by celebrated Narrabri-based artist BROOKE DALTON. One of the most beloved names in our stable of regular exhibitors, Dalton has amassed a passionate following among art and design lovers for the decorative flair, eclectic panache and infectious joie de vivre with which she paints spaces shaped by memory, collecting and everyday ritual. Richly expressive and alive with colour, her latest series of interior scenes can now be explored and acquired online and at the gallery.

Working with loose, energetic brushwork that perfectly matches the maximalist exuberance of the interiors she depicts, Dalton conjures rooms that feel both deeply personal and universally inviting. Abundant tablescapes, overflowing bookshelves, fresh-cut flowers and patterned furnishings come together in warm, colour-soaked compositions where painted ceramics, treasured books, sumptuous textiles and gathered curios celebrate the pleasures of living among beautiful, well-loved things.

Bursts of lush greens, rosy pinks and rich blues enliven vases brimming with blooms, while every surface hums with the traces of lives thoughtfully lived and lovingly arranged. A joyous celebration of home as a place of creativity, comfort and self-expression, Habitus finds Dalton further refining the distinctive visual language that has made her one of the most sought-after painters to exhibit regularly at Michael Reid Murrurundi.
