Edgar Allen Poe: Master of the Macabre and one of my favourite writers.

Step into the shadowy world of Edgar Allen Poe, the literary genius whose tales of madness, mystery and the macabre have haunted readers for generations. A pioneer of gothic horror and psychological suspense, Poe explored the darkest corners of the human mind, weaving stories filled with obsession, guilt, death and the supernatural.

Born in Boston in 1809, Poe endured the early loss of his parents and spent much of his life struggling with poverty, grief and personal hardship. He worked as a writer, editor and literary critic, helping shape the modern short story and detective fiction before his mysterious death in Baltimore on 1849.

We all know the haunting rhythm of The Raven and the chilling descent into madness in The Tell-Tale heart, his writing blurs the line between reality and nightmare. Darkly atmospheric, beautifully unsettling and endlessly influential, Poe’s work remains essential reading for lovers of gothic literature and the strange, the mysterious and the beautifully dark.

For readers who find beauty in darkness.

Why jigsaw puzzles are great for kids:

They aren’t just a fun way to keep little hands busy, they’re helping kids learn while they play.

Builds problem-solving skills. Kids learn to work things out, try different strategies and think logically.

Boosts concentration. Finding the right piece takes patience and focus, helping children develop their attention span.

Develop visual skills. Puzzles help kids recognise shapes, colours, patterns and how pieces fit together.

Sources:
American Academy of Paediatrics - recommends play as an important context for children’s learning, development and quality time away from screens.
National Association for the Education of Young Children - explains how play supports problem-solving, language, social development and other learning skills.
Harvard University Centre on the Developing Child - Activities that involve focus, planning and self control help children develop executive-function skills.

Improves fine motor skills. Picking up, turning and placing puzzle pieces helps strengthen hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

Builds confidence. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of finding that final piece. Completing a puzzle gives children a wonderful sense of achievement.

And they’re great for family time. Sit down together, switch off the screens and enjoy some quality time solving a puzzle.

Staff Pick: Iron Widow by Xidan Jay Zhao. This is a literary historical-inspired futuristic Chinese sci fi mash-up. Think Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid’s Tale meets Matt Damon’s The Wall. Chinese history meets giant transforming robots. And a heroine who is done with the system.

In Husain young men become celebrity pilots of giant mecha called chrysalises, while the girls are forced to pilot alongside them are treated as expendable, with a lot of them dying from the mental strain.

18 year old Zetia volunteers to become a concubine pilot for one reason - revenge. She intends to assassinate the pilot responsible for her sister’s death. But she survives and discovers she is something the system has never known how to control - an iron widow.

This is a trilogy and the first book ends on a cliffhanger and it’s a fairly significant one. Without spoiling anything, the ending has a major revelation about the world and the enemy and a decision is made that completely changes the direction of the story. Book two is Heavenly Tyrant and we have the first two books in stock and can always order the third book in.

A refreshingly different book beautifully written, highly recommended.

Get Christmas shopping sorted early!

We have a variety of games and puzzles for little ones, including this Shopping Chaos Memory Game, suitable for ages 3+.

Great for popping under the tree and an excellent option when you want to give kids something they can actually play with rather than another toy that’s forgotten in a week.

Shopping Chaos is a colourful memory game where little shoppers race around the supermarket finding the food items on their shopping list and filling their trolley. Players can also draw Chaos Cards which add silly surprises to the game. Great for memory, concentration, learning through, group play and screen-free fun.

New release, The Secret Society of Librarians by Kate Thompson takes us straight into the world of N**i occupied Poland and the bombings of London. Librarians Dorotha and Joyce know only the world of books can offer safety and comfort to the people around them. So begins the story of these two women secretly distributing books as acts of defiance and of offering the people around them a chance to escape horrors of WWII.

What I loved about this book is that’s it’s about the power of books, friendship and women finding extraordinary courage. Books can be so much more than something we read. They can be comfort, connection and a form of resistance. I particularly liked the friendship between Joyce and Dorotha and the courage they found in the worst of circumstances. These are seemingly ordinary women trying to carry on with their everyday lives but they become part of something much bigger than themselves.

The Secret Society of Librarians is heartbreaking in places but ultimately it’s a beautiful story about friendship, hope, history and the power of books. Add this to your TBR list.
