Emotional Competence
We have quite a few collections on our website, but one that I believe is really important is our Emotional Regulation and Children's Well-being collection. Promoting emotional competence is so important and the products in this range can help you help your children to recognise and talk about their feelings. But why is this important? The more we learn about how the brain works, the more we begin to realise that effective learning depends on emotional energy.
Furthermore, emotionally competent people:
Are able to understand, express and manage their emotions
Can read and understand the emotions of others
Respond well to others and have the ability to get on with a wide range of people
Have positive self esteem and self image
Are comfortable with who they are
Are usually easy to talk to
Are able to show empathy for others
Work well as part of a group
Are optimistically confident
Have emotional strength to deal with the ups and downs of daily life
Have good interpersonal skills
Sort out problems in an assertive rather than aggressive way
Can think reflectively and make links between their actions and their emotions
A few tips for managing emotions:
Try to avoid telling children how they should feel
Listen with attention and empathise with how children are feeling
Offer guidance on how to regulate emotions, set limits and help children learn how to express emotions in a way that doesnโt hurt others
Encourage children to think reflectively and learn from mistakes
Provide a safe place where children can go when things get too much
