Staying Flow. Among other things, May brought the disappointment of cancelling our upcoming A4DInterwoven journeys. Like many of life’s unexpected turns, it has asked for resilience, perspective and a willingness to respond to change rather than resist it.

It’s been a wild ride building a life and business from the ground up. As a woman, a founder, and a freelancer, I’ve learned that not every season is about expansion. Some seasons ask us to listen more carefully to what is being called for. Perhaps that’s why I’m going off-grid for June.

I’m stepping away from Instagram and Facebook for the month and spending some time paying attention to what emerges when I stop reaching for familiar answers and allow myself to meet change with curiosity instead.

I’ll still be writing over on A Life Interwoven and in my Moonletter.. you’ll find the links in my bio.

Nothing is Everything, Salone 2009.

After viewing Milan Design Week through my phone rather than in the materials themselves, I found myself looking back at my very first Salone in 2009.

I had taken this photograph on the street before even stepping inside ~ a layered collage built from what was already there, torn posters, fragments, colour, tape, type. Nothing is Everything ~ a way of working, long before I had the language for it.

I’ve written more on this ~ my first Salone, the archive, and the moment material began to lead across everything I was doing.

Sunday, slowly ~ Faces of the Earth basketry by As you know, baskets hold a special place in my heart. This latest collaboration draws from ceremonial masks ~ forms that carry spirit and memory.

What does it mean to carry that presence into an object that moves through the world with someone? It feels like a travel talisman to me.

That is very close to how I feel about it. The ceremonial mask has always represented more than appearance to me. It holds invocation, identity, protection, and passage. When that language enters an object that travels with someone, it becomes intimate in a different way. It leaves ritual space and enters daily life while still carrying something of its original depth. I think of these pieces as quiet companions. They move through airports, streets, homes, and cities, yet they continue carrying an interior presence. A talisman is powerful because it does not need to announce itself. Its work is subtle. It remains close to the body and close to memory. What matters to me is treating the spirit of the original reference with care, ensuring that what is carried forward is not just the surface, but a deeper sense of continuity.

For International Women’s Day, I’m sharing a conversation with designer , founder of , on her recent collaboration with ~ a Sydney social enterprise creating employment and training pathways for refugee and migrant women in fashion.

Kirsty and I first met over 25 years ago while studying fashion together at RMIT University. Our paths have continued to intersect through textiles, material histories and a shared belief in clothing as a living cultural practice.

Years later, she travelled to Ghana at my invitation to teach patternmaking and sewing ~ another moment where fashion became a space for knowledge-sharing and connection.

Her latest project, TESSELLATE, brings together donated fabric remnants from Australian brands like .official and the skilled hands of the women working in The Social Outfit’s Marrickville studio to create one-of-a-kind garments.

In our conversation for Mother Tongue Journal, Kirsty reflects on collaboration, circular design, working with limitation and the quiet power of making clothes collectively.
