Pit firing workshop day 🔥… well, almost!
Our fire permit was suspended, so Plan A quickly became Plan B — but we still managed to learn a heap, laugh a lot, wrap what felt like kilometres of foil, pack in plenty of wood and natural materials, and get all our pieces ready for their turn in the fire.
Now they’re tucked away waiting patiently for the next suitable date when Janelle can finally light it up… and I think the anticipation might make the reveal even better! 🤞
A huge thank you to Janelle for having us all over, sharing everything she knows about pit firing, feeding our curiosity and, most importantly, agreeing to be the very trusted caretaker of all our little masterpieces until firing day. 😂❤️
Such a great day with a fabulous group of women — even without the actual fire!
Now we wait… 🔥🏺🌿

A fantastic result for Tamworth Community Ceramics at Arts Gunnedah!

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate three of our talented Tamworth Community Ceramics members who received awards at the 55th Arts Gunnedah Annual Art and Ceramic Exhibition.

🥇 Elaine Abberfield – First Place, Hand Built Pot
🥈 Dayle Lummis – Second Place, Hand Built Pot
🥈 Susi Bell – Second Place, Novice Ceramics

What a wonderful result for our little pottery shed! 💙

With more than 350 artworks entered in this year’s exhibition from artists across the region and beyond, it is fantastic to see the creativity and skill being developed within our Tamworth ceramics community recognised.

Congratulations Laine, Dayle and Susi — and to all of our members who entered work in this year’s exhibition. Putting your work out there to be exhibited and judged takes courage, and we’re very proud to see Tamworth Community Ceramics represented.

These results are also a lovely reminder of what happens when artists have a place to create, learn from one another, experiment and keep developing their skills.

Three ribbons coming home to Tamworth! 🏆🏺👏

Winter. The perfect time to gather some friends. Light a fire. And throw in some....pots!

That's what a group of our potters will be doing in a few weeks, under the watchful eye of our beautiful tutor, Janelle.

Pitt firing is a traditional pottery technique that involves burying pottery pieces in a pit with combustible materials like wood, leaves and sawdust and setting the pit on fire.

This method creates unique and unpredictable patterns and colour, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces that cannot be replicated by electric or gas kilns.

Pit firing is considered an eco friendly method, with a rich history dating back thousands of years.

We can't wait to see the results but, in the meantime, here is some of the work from previous workshops.

What a fantastic weekend demonstration workshop with Maryke Henderson! We loved welcoming everyone into the studio for a weekend of inspiration, learning, and community. It was a privilege to watch Maryke work and gain such valuable insight into her process and techniques.

A big thank you to Maryke for her generosity in sharing her expertise, and to everyone who joined us to make the weekend so special. We’re always grateful for the chance to come together to learn and connect.

Our "Land" exhibition featuring works from the Monday night potters is now on display in the cabinet in the main craft centre building.

It's a lovely combination of colours, hand building and wheel thrown pieces and different clay.

Well done to everyone for helping to create such a beautiful display.

Congratulations to Karen, Belinda, Elisabeth, Jen, Lil, Pip and Susi, and their super tutors, Janelle and Laine, who just completed a 6 week throwing class.

Laine says that the group developed from finding it hard to centre to attempting to pull a 10 inch cylinder - something they would never have tried.

The course gave them " confidence to go past their comfort zone" and Laine said that it was " just amazing - it's the beginning of a lifetime of learning and we could not have asked for a lovelier group."

Well done, ladies. We look forward to sharing some of your creations over the coming weeks.
