Last Sunday we had a visit from , who brought along some wonderful history connected to our building at 232 Fitzgerald Street.

Before it became home to Northam Secondhand, the premises was occupied by Beavis Bros, who purchased the building in 1944 following the old co-op era. They sold hardware and farm supplies, serviced Austin motor cars, and later became agents for Dodge and Case machinery, becoming a familiar part of Fitzgerald Street life for decades.

Parked outside during the visit was a beautifully restored 1946 Fordson utility with traditional timber-framed bodywork, the sort of practical post-war vehicle that would have looked perfectly at home outside Beavis Bros in its working days.

A particularly special piece was this engraved 1924 presentation tray:

“With compliments from C.T. Beavis, Fitzgerald Street, Northam.”

A keeper from old Northam, found in Victoria

This silver-plated advertising tray belonged to C.L. King, greengrocer and fruiterer, who traded opposite the post office in the interwar years.

A 1935 Northam Advertiser ad places the business “right opposite Post Office and next to Roedigers Ltd. Butchers.”

Nearly a century later, we’re still trading across from the post office on Fitzgerald Street.
