Here the Age results from our biggest Flametail snapper from FNQ last November. Emily from QLD Fishing Research and the East Coast Deepwater project sent me this report.

Great fish ! A few of us have aged it and all came up 30 + Years.
What i thought was cool was the bright band across the middle of the otoliths. Looks like it’s sitting at about 12 yrs old which , since you got this fish in 2025 would have been around 2004. Could be from a few things - either environmental change like lots of cold water / rainfall or Physiological change ( like food availability ). Hard to say as we don’t know we’re the fish was then ??

Interesting info thanks to Em for the info.
Cheers Pete

Great 5 hrs fishing with Luke onboard Randy Cat in s**t conditions like most of the yr soo far. Bom forecast so far from the mark but the fish chewed hard in the deep water. Using Raptor lites on the Big Smart 145s Reels and Leader System Australia Rigs the fish had no chance with a great bag of XOS Pearlie’s and big Flametail snapper. Nice comet cods and Tangs Snapper and Pink snapper all welcome catches. Enjoy the picks guys !! Luke Fletcher
