What do you think of this brood laying pattern right here? You can judge a queen bee's efficiency through her laying pattern. Usually, she would start laying from the middle, essentially to give space for honey or pollen storage around the outside of the frame.

A part of a worker bee’s job list is to be the queen bee’s attendants. Only some of the worker bees get appointed this job. They’re the ones that groom and feed the queen bee as she is too busy laying eggs. These bees can also put the queen on a diet! During swarm season, large colonies will divide in two to reproduce and propagate their species, this is called swarming in beekeeping terms. Half of the colony including the queen will fly out and start a new colony in a different location. The remaining bees will then make their new queen and continue on. The queen rarely flies out and must fly in a great distance when they swarm due to their size and weight, which is why the attendants will put her on diet as part of the preparation for swarming. The queen loses at least 1/3 of her normal body weight in order to fly out.

This season, always be on the lookout for signs that your bees are preparing to swarm! Some signs that your bees are going to swarm are: ⁠
- An abundance of food stored in the hive, with little space for more⁠
- A lack of comb space for brood rearing ⁠
- A high worker and drone population and/or ‘idle’ worker bees⁠
- The construction of queen cell cups (the foundation of queen cells), which will be on the lower and side edges of brood combs⁠
- Queen cell caps containing eggs or larvae – from this point your hive is definitely preparing to swarm⁠
- Capped queen cells on the lower and side edges of combs (aka swarm cells) – your hive could swarm any time now!⁠
- The removal of wax from the tip of queen cells exposing the cocoon – take urgent action to manage the swarm⁠

The queen isn’t the only one that is fed with royal jelly. Worker bee brood are also fed with royal jelly, however it varies how LONG they are fed with it. For the queen bee, she is fed with royal jelly throughout her brood lifecycle. Meanwhile, worker bee brood is fed with royal jelly until they transition to larvae. Since then, they will be fed with bee bread.

How can the bees carry so much resources during their flight? ⭐⭐⁠

When a bee collects nectar, it goes onto a second part of her stomach called the nectar sac or their honey stomach. This part of their stomach doesn’t digest the honey and is only used for carrying nectar. It can hold up to 70mg of nectar and can usually weigh like the bee itself.
