Every traveller needs to be aware of new changes. It’s a Travellers responsibility to check before they travel and arrive at their destination.

A major change is coming to travel across Europe—and Greece is fully included.

The new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen Area, including Greece, marking a complete shift in how borders are controlled.

From April 2026, the system becomes fully operational, replacing the traditional passport stamping process with a fully digital system.

This means that every time a non-EU traveler enters or leaves countries like Greece, their details will be recorded electronically. The system will collect biometric data such as fingerprints and facial scans, along with passport information and the exact time and place of entry or exit.

The goal is clear: stronger border control, better tracking of who enters and leaves Europe, and automatic detection of overstays beyond the 90 days allowed within a 180-day period.

For travelers, this brings both advantages and challenges. In the long term, it is expected to make border crossings faster and more secure. However, during the early stages, delays are likely—especially at airports and border checkpoints—as the new system is introduced.

It’s important to note that this does not affect EU citizens, including Greeks. It applies only to visitors from outside the European Union, such as tourists from the UK, the US, and other non-EU countries.

This system is also just the beginning. Later in 2026, the EU plans to introduce ETIAS, a pre-travel authorization similar to the US ESTA, adding another layer of control before travelers even arrive in Europe.
