Giorgos Mazonakis was one of a kind. He was my kind of singer and songwriter 💔

Driving from Melbourne to Sydney today gave me a lot of time to think about him. I spent most of the trip listening to his songs, really hearing the lyrics, and of course I found tears in my eyes on more than one occassion.

He had attitude, but not in an arrogant way. He was bold, emotional, original and completely himself. That’s what made him different, and that’s what made me love him.

I kept thinking about all the memories and emotions his music has given so many of us over the years. I know that I will truly miss him.

The Forty Holy Virgin-Martyrs lived during the time of Emperor Licinius, around 305 AD, in Adrianople of Thrace. They were students of Deacon Ammun and remained devoted to Christ.

When they were accused before the ruler of Adrianople and ordered to renounce their faith and worship idols, they refused. Their courage and sacrifice remain a powerful example of faith, purity and devotion to Christ ❤️

Today, Sunday 30 August, we honour Agios Alexandros the Patriarch of Constantinople.

As Patriarch, Agios Alexandros served the Church with wisdom, prayer and great responsibility during a time when the faith was being tested. He is remembered as a faithful shepherd who protected the Church and guided the people with strength and devotion to Christ.

May Agios Alexandros intercede for all those celebrating today and bring them health, peace and blessings.

Today we honour Saint Fanourios, a young Christian martyr known for his unwavering faith and devotion to Christ. Despite persecution and great suffering, Saint Fanourios refused to renounce his faith.

He is traditionally depicted holding a cross and a lit candle, symbols of his faith and the light of Christ.

May Saint Fanourios intercede for us, guide us and protect us.

TODAY WE MAKE ΦΑΝΟΥΡΟΠΙΤΑ!

August 27th is dedicated to Saint Fanourios – Άγιος Φανούριος

Every year on his feast day we make Fanouropita, a traditional fasting cake made in honour of Saint Fanourios.

Saint Fanourios is the Saint we turn to when we have lost something or when we are looking for something we cannot find ourselves.

“Άγιε Φανούριε, φανέρωσέ μου…”

There are many different recipes for Fanouropita and I think most Greek families have their own. Traditionally it is made with 7 or 9 ingredients, usually including flour, olive oil, sugar, walnuts, raisins, cinnamon and orange juice.

When making the Fanouropita, we also say a prayer for the soul of Saint Fanourios’ mother.

It’s one of those Greek traditions that has been passed down through generations and one that I hope we continue to pass down to ours.
