It was once said the only thing the whole world agrees on is Dolly Parton. What an icon. With her Imagination Library having gifted over 332 million books to children worldwide since she founded it in 1995 (and songs written by her having sold over 100 million copies), Dolly loved words. Was brilliant with them. Thank you and sleep tight Dolly, we will always love you.

Here at Where the Books Are we strongly recommend picturing the classics in their underwear as an anti-intimidation tactic.

We all know the rule… the book is always better than the film, and Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster The Odyssey is no exception!

If you loved the wild adventure of The Odyssey and want to immerse yourself in more Greek myth, here’s Laura’s recommendations (brought to you by four years of studying classics at University).

An entire world awaits…

When you inadvertently dress for work as The Odyssey . . . Dr Emily Wilson’s translation of Homer’s ancient blockbuster is in store and boy, it’s a banger. It’s the first complete English verse translation in The Odyssey’s almost 3000 year history by a female, and the woman’s touch is fascinating. No cosplay required to read it.

And today’s category is… the book’s you will never forget.

“I could recognise him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.” - Madeline Miller, The Song of Achilles

This week’s bestsellers — school holidays are bringing out the absolute best from our shelves.

We have the wonderful Mix-A-Mutt to keep the little ones entertained and using their imagination for all sorts of whacky pup combinations, and The Bow-wow Ballet for more dog action.

And for the adults, The Things We Never Say and Whistler, something lovely to sink into in this cold weather. And London Falling for our true crime fans (we’ll see you at Book Club Social).

And then we have all the planes and trains and automobiles galore for the little people and big people!
