May 2 Day Boat Comp Report.
Local 2 day boat comp in May and the weather forecast was once again very decent. We have been very lucky with the weather thus far and have not had any missed comps to date. The mint forecast brought in 44 anglers over 16 boats! Solid turn up and surely this would mean some decent bags coming across the sick plastic temporary weigh in bench we still are using- Cheers COJ!

Across our species list we all chipped in to tick off 15 out of the 16 species on the that list. The only specie that was not found from the boat was the mighty Mulloway. The young Pilmoor boys had some excellent fish. Byron Pilmoor had a 208 gram Sand Whiting that was the biggest for the day. Though his bro, Finn Pilmoor, who had thumping 1.102kg King George Whiting was I think personally the fish of the comp- It was a proper SNAKE🐍 Chuckie Walters had a few on the heaviest list. A solid Trevally over a 1 kilo and very decent Tailor at 1.113kg caught very close to home. Some decent tuna still being caught and I managed to get the biggest for the comp with a nice local Yellow Fin at 17.7Kg- benefits of not being the skipper for the day going my way- cheers T-Roy 🤣 Not many sharks being weighed but Ashton Marsden had a little gummy shark that he released to fight another day. Plenty of sambos and Elliot Tunahurst had a cracker the pulled the scales down to 16.750kg. I could only imagine what was going through that sambos head when it hit the deck. Staring up at Elliot Tunahurst and Sean "Tyson Fury" fully clothed, it was at that time it new it was having a bad day😜 One more mention as this was a beast. Little Joe W had a solid snook that was just about the same length as him going 2.23kg- nice snook for Perth local.

Onto our weigh and this one took a while to get through- thanking all the weigh group for what I am calling resilience- don't know if that is even spelt write. So starting with the mini juniors that had a packed out field. In third with a very good haul of 7 species, 2 heaviest, 2.018kg and 86 was Taylor Gauci. Second with 8 species, 0 heaviest, 3.896kg was Heidi Thomson. In first with 9 species, 5 heaviest, 6.488kg and 133 points was Harvey Thomson, another great bag buddy.
Into our junior section and in Second with 4 species, 0 heaviest, 1.123kg and 42.2 points was Jade G. In first was Cruze Marsden with 5 species, 5 heaviest, 2.106kg and 84.2 points. Well done.
The veterans must have had no scones and cream at the retirement village as we had a good show in this category. In third was my second favorite Vet, Graham Coles. Colesy had 5 species, 2 heaviest, 1.390kg and 64.8 points- apparently he could not get away from the King George that weekend! In second with a solid 8 species, 6 heaviest, 3.206kg and 122.4 points was Phil Pollard. In first and only fishing the one day with 11 species, 4 heaviest, 13.886kg and 161.8 points was Terry bell. Sick job getting it done in one day!
Onto our ladies and we had only two weigh in. This was a very close one again between top two✌️ Not often someone will be second with 13 species. Sally G had 13, 8 heaviest, 16.759kg and 211.5 points. In first with a crazy 14 species, 9 heaviest, 11.957kg and 217.9 points was Belinda Mallon. Hats off to you two- would have both smashed all category's men inclusive 👊👊
Onto our Men and in 3rd with I think his best bag to date of 12 species, 3 heaviest, 16.279kg and 164.6 points was Elliot Tunahurst. Second was Buckets with 11 species, 3 heaviest, 25.833kg and 179.7 points. In first with a sick bag of fish was Chuckie Walters. 13 species, 5 heaviest, 12.062kg and 184.1 points- well done mate, I think we deserve to see a flying kick from you after that effort 🤸‍♂️

It was a massive weigh in that took some time so thank you for all your patience. There is a bit more going on to get results sorted than some may think so it helps when everyone is chilled out. Thanks for the weigh in group for getting through this one 🫶🫶
Also thanks Mumma Maree and Bel for our photos.

Next boat comp is 20th June so fingers crossed for good weather again.
Belinda Mallon is organizing our new fishing hoodies, they look mad so get on them if you have not already- if its not to late🤔

Until next comp.

Month: JUNE 2026
Section: Beach Fishing
I think Ive said it every month for the past 2 seasons that I have been the beach fishing captain, but once again as we approached our monthly competition the weather forecast looked horrendous and for this comp our annual Northern away competition it was forecasted to be even worse than we usually get.

With 20-50knt NW winds and a 6m swell (the worst storm we have had in 6years), I don’t think many of us had high hopes that the fishing around port Gregory would be good…..or even do able. but nevertheless around 40 of our die-hard anglers headed off up north to at least try to have a good weekend away, and at worst enjoy a few drinks surrounded by like-minded people. And that we indeed did! The weather was crap yes, but I think everybody still thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. It was great to even see a few new members attend.

Port Gregory Caravan Park is set up so well for a trip like this. With really nice facilities that include sparkling clean BBQs, a dart board, pool table and even big screen TV in a common undercover area, which I’m happy to say all got a fair bit of use while we were unable to go fishing at periods over the weekend. That, combined with the happiest, most welcoming park manager you could ever meet, it’s hard to have a bad time up there and I’m sure we will continue to be back time and time again for many years to come.

Anyways, I suppose I should try recap the fishing side of the event. The weather on the Saturday morning was actually not too bad in my opinion, but unfortunately the fish just weren’t as red hot as usual (and the Nor West Blowies proved to be in plague numbers which didn’t help the cause) and by Saturday night it was almost un-fishable anywhere other than the rivers. Sunday morning saw the worst of the weather where most opted out of fishing and stuck with the park activities or took a short drive to the pub at Kalbarri for lunch. This social aspect is really what sets our club apart from the rest and is what makes these events worth going to even in these sorts of conditions.

We had a number of Mini Juniors fish over the weekend but only 2 managed to find weighable fish. Sisters Ellie and Millie Broadhurst both caught a Whiting each. Funnily enough they were 2 different species of Whiting so both girls had a heaviest catch as well. But in the end, on a count back of weight, Ellie took the win by about 40g.

No Juniors managed to land themselves a fish unfortunately so we will move right onto the Ladies. We had 5 weigh in with a few more unable to convert. Lynn Malone caught a couple of nice fish which was enough for 3rd place. Mother Maree Ellis lost a cracking fish at her cliff spot which was unfortunate but still had enough in her bag for 2nd place. But in the end it was Bronny who fished hard through the storm to score the win for the month. She also had the heaviest Wrasse for the weekend overall.

The old boy’s section was missing a few of the heavy hitters, I guess due to them being soft old buggers who are scared of a little rain and wind. Bruce Bennett found himself in 3rd place with his 3 species bag. Jeff Porter managed 5 species which was enough for 2nd. And once again Ole ‘poppa Smurf’ Clive Powell took out first place. His bag of 6 species also included a couple of standout fish. A Black Bream of 1.06kg (41cm) and a Flathead of 0.860kg. You’re on fire this season mate!

Onto the Men’s where we saw Rob Walter’s placed 3rd with 4 species. Little Joe Wettinger had 5 species including a Tarwhine of over 750g and a Dart of 1.146kg which put him into 2nd place. While myself Daniel Bell and my good mate Mark Pember opted to hike to some more remote cliff spots Saturday morning and I was rewarded with the best part of my 10 species bag quite early. Of note in my bag was a Baldchin Groper of 1.827kg (one of 3 baldies Mark and myself caught that morning), I also had a small shark that was 103cm (catch and release awarded 5kg) which helped with my total bag weight which was just under 10kg. We also had some cracking Yellowfin Whiting which other than the one I weighed were filleted and mixed with some fillets of surplus Dart that we had caught and made into ceviche for lunch on Sunday at the caravan park. It was amazing!

Quick mention to Chris Graves who had a really nice Golden Trevally. Not something we see up there all the time. Lovely looking fish!

So that just about concludes my write up for the June competition. I’d just like to take this time to once again thank the people who helped me up there. Firstly, the port Gregory caravan park and in particular Lawrence for letting us hold the event there. The Gauci clan for taking up all the weigh in equipment and helping with the running of the weigh-in. Kiwi as always for doing the heaviest sheets and helping me with my poor maths.
And last but never least mother Maree! These events would not be the same without you. Making platters, cooking sausages, taking photos, along with just being your happy go lucky fun-loving self. We all thank you from the bottoms of our hearts!

Our next event is not for quite some time now. This will be held on the 18th/19th of July and will be back to our standard ‘go anywhere’ style comps with the weigh-in at the club.

I hope to see you all there.

Cheers

Gday all- June Boat comp this Saturday. 6am kick off with 4pm on the dot weigh in. Weather forecast is going to be freezing with that NE sucking off the coast - so rug up for this one. No swell to contend with so should just be a matter of the skipper doing their job to find the fish! Still no demersals and if anyone has any queries about their catch this can be discussed with weigh in officer Scotty or myself prior to weigh in. If anyone is chasing further information please reach out.
I will update the catch n release code on Friday afternoon.

April Boat Report- Jurien Bay 2 Day Comp
The new date had been set for the annual Jurien Bay 2 day comp to
the ANZAC long weekend to try improve our chances with better conditions. We attracted 9 boats with 21 anglers signing on for this one, numbers slightly lower than the usual J-bay two dayer in September.
We had a very reasonable forecast for this one with winds under 14 knots and the swell being friendlier than expected. With the FADS still deployed and pelagic action being on fire we where sure to see some decent fished brought over the scales.
We had plenty of Blue Fin Tuna caught and notably it was Dawn Cass who mentioned it was her first one weighed in at a comp! Dawn also weighed in her first Mullaway to go with- nice work. We had plenty of Mullaway come through the scales and it was Elliot Tunahursts 10.8kg that took out the biggest for the weekend. A few boats managed to work the FADS and where rewarded with dolphin fish. We had about ten sitting along side the boat just following up a wound in dredge, slippery suckers would not take a hook though! Sally and Scotty G had the pick of the dollies and I am pretty sure as normal, Sally had the bigger one out of the two. Only the one Yellow Tail King weighed in for the comp. After getting railed by some solid ones I managed to coax a 13Kg model to the boat!
Into the weigh in we had the one Mini Junior Taylor Gauci represent. Taylor fished with grandad and 2 species, 2 heaviest,275grams with 32.6 points. In the Juniors also a lone soldier fishing with grandad was Jade Gauci. Jade had 1 specie, also the heaviest, 148 grams with 16.3 points. The girls getting it done whilst mum and dad went out wider.
We had a few vets make it for this one and in third with 3 species, 1 heaviest, 1.03kg and 38.1 points was Clive Powell. In second and we do not say this much was Terry Bell. Terry had 5 species, 4 heaviest, 14.84kg and 103.7 points. In first with 8 species, 5 heaviest, 6.57kg and 123.1 points was Phil Pollard- well done mate.
Onto the ladies divi in third with 2 species, 4.949kg and 29.9 points was Belinda Mallon. In second with a solid bag was Dawn Cass. Dawn had 5 species, 4 heaviest, 11.45kg and 96.9 points. Taking out the chocolates in first was Sally G with 7 species, 6 heaviest, 8.12kg and 122.2 points!
Into the boys and it was a shootout between deckie and skipper for second. In third with 8 species, 1 heaviest, 7.64kg and 101.3 points was Chuckie. Just taking second with 7 species, 2 heaviest, 9.83kg and 101.7 points was Tony O'Sullivan! Sooo close. in first with a very solid bag for Jurien with no demersals was myself. Buckets had 10 species, 2 heaviest, 24.74kg and 161.5 points- belted my deckie RED!
Sausage sizzle was on thanks to Belinda for cooking up.
After the weigh in we got the fire pit out to sit around and spill some yarns about the weekend. Lil Joe and Chuckie seen that not many would be standing to close to fire this year as the flames went higher than the shed!
Having this comp on the ANZAC long weekend did not have the same "feel" about it and numbers did show.
Hopefully once our new calendar is up we can all have some input on how we can get it back to the norm again with as many involved as possible.
Cheers to terry for once again having no issues with us holding the comp at the house, very much appreciated.
Next Boat comp is 2 day May Comp held in Perth.
