Rare repousse fish decorated brass letter holder designed by John Williams c1900. The School operated successfully for over half a century from 1890 from the small village of Newton, seven miles south west of Cambridge. See our July 2020 post of the companion brass planter also designed by Williams for manufacture by the School. Arts and crafts collectors should also read the thoroughly researched article which unearthed the history and importance of this School, including the involvement of Williams and his sister Mary, by David Marshall in the 2021 The Decorative Arts Society Journal and in which these two items are illustrated. Rare fish decorated wall pocket/candle holder or post box the design attributed to the master metalworker who is known to have taught at the for about 6 years in the late 1890's. An identical copper piece to this in dimensions and decoration was sold by Hill House Antiques in 2012 and remains in their "Sold Archive" of items on their website. That item bore Pearson's fully stamped mark, a shape number and the date 1901. NFS.
