On this International Literacy Day, our co-owner Alison Frenzel responds to the viral Atlantic article “The End of Reading Is Here.”

Dear Fabled friends—and those we have yet to meet,

A viral article made quite a stir this summer by declaring that “the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history.” At Fabled, however; we see something different. Parents regularly tell us about their children reading independently for the first time—sometimes right here at Fabled! Strangers become friends among the shelves over a beloved classic. And our famous “literary linger” keeps guests browsing far longer than they intended.

You see, books invite us into deeper learning, greater compassion, and a fuller understanding of one another. Perhaps the future of reading does not depend on championing books in the abstract, but on helping each person discover the particular book that awakens curiosity, offers companionship, or makes the world feel both larger and smaller.

Readers are still being made every day—in homes, classrooms, libraries, bookshops‚ and especially when someone presses a beloved book into another’s hands and says, “I think you’ll love this.” As long as we continue making these human connections, the age of reading is far from over.

Congratulations to Deborah Abela, who has been named the recipient of the 2026 Lady Cutler Award by the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) NSW Branch.

The award recognises Deborah's outstanding contribution to children's literature and literacy in Australia, and her longstanding support of young readers, writers and illustrators.
