Spring is definitely here! Today is day three of warm weather in southern Tassie 😍
The catch, we’ve had cold temps for all of winter, and the tubers are still slumbering. So the plan for us?
Plan A - our tubers pop and we’ll have a sale towards the end of September
Plan B - we plant first, and have a larger sale in October!
Either way we have a good number of our 450+ varieties, and are looking at listing around 250-300 of those 😱
Oh and we’re increasing our growing area again this year!

Some might say we’re a bit nuts for dahlias 🤣

The moral of the story… get your soil tested!

We had an inkling our soil was a little overcooked when the 2025 season saw a ridiculous amount of ‘accessory’ tuber growth. You know the ones, tubers growing off of tubers that make you think you have a nice big clump, when all you really have is more feed for the sheep 🙈
So last season we toned the fertilising RIGHT down. Minimal at planting, and two foliar feeds. Healthy plants, a little slow to take off, but good flowering and way less redundant tubers!
Soil tests done this winter… our soil is rather over done on pretty much everything! But the pH is great so there’s a win!
The plan for this year is… nothing! No fertilising until they’re actively growing, and even then only after plant material testing. It’ll take a few seasons to adjust the levels through active management of dahlias and green crops, but for now - the memo is do some soil testing people!! 🤣
Oh, and it probably means I can plant even closer as a way of increasing uptake - win!!

When you’re neck deep in dividing it’s important to remember that these ugly, stubborn, sometimes stinky tubers turn into the most beautiful of flowers!

Our clumps are nearly all divided, we should hopefully be finished by the end of next week, with our website fully updated by the end of August. Our tuber sale will be sometime in September - totally dependant on how quickly the tubers wake up!
In the meantime if you need to squirrel away some tax return dollars gift cards are available in our store!

Apparently reels are out and carousels are back, and we are for it!

Dahlia dividing is well underway now we’re back from our extended conference holiday (with a few new lovelies for the patch as well!).
We’ve got a pretty good system going, and using our new shed is much nicer than the kitchen bench 😂 Also, can highly recommend a tropical holiday post dahlia digging madness, it’s a very pleasant change to come home and they’re not sitting there in the mud still waiting to be dug!!

And we’re finished!
All of our plants are now out of ground, washed, trimmed and stored to dry for the next few weeks. Roughly 35hrs to dig, trim, wash and pack. Pretty sure Leo’s look sums up the feeling, next time I’m taking the week off 🤣
The sheep are now on weeding duty, the grass will get munched down, and we’ll sow a green manure when we get back.

The good news? It finally rained! The bad news… we got 140mm in three days. Not ideal for tubers that have grown in a drier summer!
So we’re attempting to get most of our tubers out before we leave for the National Dahlia Conference in a fortnight. Yikes. With both working full time 🤣

And that’s a wrap on Agfest, and our season!!

We’ve spent three big days supporting at Agfest, seeing new and familiar faces, and getting some much needed plant time! Returning to our farm this afternoon we spent twenty minutes unwinding in our patch, and enjoying the last few blooms we could find.

Now it’s on to digging, dividing, and planning to do it all again next season! 💚
