Monday Tech Tip - Exact fit backing plates and pads to suit

When I’m working on big, flat panels like roofs and bonnet's, I always match the backing plate size to the pad as closely as possible because every millimetre of unsupported foam changes how the pad behaves under load. An exact‑fit combination keeps the entire pad supported, which means the cut stays consistent across the face and the finish quality improves because the pad isn’t flexing or collapsing at the edges.

A small increase in cut and a noticeably cleaner finish is usually the result.

Most backing plates are made 5–10 mm smaller than the pad. That gap is intentional. It stops the plate from touching the paint if you roll the machine over a curve or an edge, and curved‑edge pads give you the best protection in those situations because the plate is recessed inside the pad.

A 10 mm difference works well with wool pads on a rotary because there are times when you need that extra flexibility when using the pad titled on angle. You can tilt the machine, use the edge and chase defects in tight spots without the plate getting involved.

But when you’re running a DA or a rotary with the pad flat on a panel that's not entirely flat, a 5 mm difference is the better option. It keeps the pad stable without removing the safety margin you need on curved panels.

On big flat roofs, boots and bonnets, I go even tighter. An exact fit gives the pad nowhere to collapse, nowhere to balloon and nowhere to waste energy. The pad stays flat, the cut stays predictable and the finish stays cleaner.

This combination in the photo is only a few millimetres off an exact match. Once you close that gap completely, the pad and plate deliver a slight to moderate increase in cut and a superb finish, especially on the rotary and that’s exactly what you want.
