We all know that we need to reduce our plastic use, but it can be overwhelming and confusing to know where to start π€π€ͺ! However once you do get started, it really is very easy. And did you know that July represents a month to promote plastic free? To help you get started, weβre sharing a few simple and practical tips that we use ourselves to lessen our load and reduce the amount of plastic that our family consumes;
1. Shop in Bulk π - Wherever possible, choose to purchase your food in bulk, either in larger quantities that you can re-package and store at home, or from bulk food stores who offer loose staples where you take just what you need. This works especially well for pantry staples such as rice, flour and dried fruit and nuts. It is often a much more cost effective way to purchase food - our current favourite is store.
2. Choose Loose Produce π - So much of our fruit and veg is wrapped in unnecessary plastic bags or packaging. Opt for loose produce wherever possible and you'll find that not only will you reduce your consumption of plastic, in most cases you'll save money too as it takes extra labour to put food in any type of packaging!
3. Opt for Steel or Glass Containers π«- When replacing re-useable containers at home, opt to invest in glass or stainless steel for food storage. It is a healthier option in that these materials don't leach chemicals into our food in the same way as plastic does, they have a much longer life span and can be fully recycled at their end of life. Even if you just start with one or two items, there are containers for all budgets. Check out Kmartβs range of glass containers in a variety of sizes which are perfect for home. For on the go, we use our Tucker Tin to keep freshness sealed in and as a lighter and less fragile option than glass.
