Wow, this week has been an absolute blur 🫠

If winter could kindly wrap itself up now and bring the warm weather back, that would be great because I am DONE with the sickness doing its rounds through our house 😭🫠

And the whole reason I even went looking for these numbers in the first place? 🤣

Because when I was thinking about how to explain autism to a child, one of the most important things I wanted them to know was:

You are not alone. Not even close.

There are so many other autistic and neurodivergent kids out there — I just wanted to be able to tell them how many.

Apparently that was too much to ask. 🤣

But the rabbit hole also left me with a much bigger question…

If more than 1 in 4 Australian students are ALREADY receiving disability-related educational adjustments, how the flip are schools supposed to absorb even more responsibility as support is shifted away from individualised disability funding and further into mainstream systems?

Teachers are already stretched. EAs are already stretched. Schools are already trying to meet the needs of a huge number of children.

The child’s support needs don’t disappear just because the system responsible for meeting them changes.

And if we don’t even have current, comprehensive data showing how many neurodivergent children there actually are…

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t telling a child they’re autistic.

It’s knowing that one day, the world may try to make them feel like they are too much.

Too sensitive.
Too loud.
Too quiet.
Too intense.
Too different.

And I wish we could protect them from ever feeling like they need to make themselves smaller just to be accepted.

Because autism isn’t something that takes away from who they are.

It is woven through the way they experience the world.
The way they feel.
The way they notice.
The way they love.
The way they think.

So maybe explaining autism to a child doesn’t need to begin with everything that might be hard.

Maybe it can begin with:

“Your brain experiences the world in its own way. And you never have to become someone else to deserve love, understanding or belonging.”

Because the goal was never to teach autistic children how to fit into the world.
