There’s something about the first signs of spring

Here in Australia, we’re starting to feel that little shift in the air.

The days are stretching out, the mornings are changing, plants are beginning to wake up, and there’s that unmistakable feeling that winter is slowly loosening its grip.

For me, this is one of the things I love most about practising witchcraft in the Southern Hemisphere.

So much of the witchcraft we see online is written from a Northern Hemisphere perspective, which can sometimes leave us looking at pictures of autumn leaves while we're watching everything around us burst into life 😂

But our seasons have their own magic.

Our land has its own rhythms.

And I think there’s something really special about learning to notice and work with the seasons that are actually happening around us. 🖤

So as we head towards spring, I'm curious

**What is the first sign of spring that you notice where you live?**

Is it the weather?
New growth in the garden?
Birds becoming more active?
Longer evenings?
Or just that feeling that something is shifting?

Tell me below, I'd love to hear what spring looks like where you are.

🌿 I’m still here… just a little quieter than usual. 🌿

The last couple of months have been a bit of a whirlwind, and life decided it needed my attention elsewhere for a while. Somewhere along the way, Witch Now Australia went a little quiet too.

But I’ve been missing this little corner of the witchy world. ✨

So… I’m back. 🖤

I’ve got plenty of ideas swirling around for the coming months, and I’m really looking forward to getting back to sharing Southern Hemisphere witchcraft, seasonal practices, spiritual musings and a few other witchy things along the way.

And with the Wheel turning towards spring here in Australia, it feels like a particularly good time to begin again. 🌱

Tell me, what have you been working with lately? What are you looking forward to as we move towards spring?

Folklore Friday: The Wagyl 🐍🌊

I’ve talked about mermaids, selkies, and the Murray River mermaid. But this week we’re looking at a Noongar Dreaming story from WA.
These aren’t ‘myths’ to Noongar people; they're law, history, and spirituality.

A quick note on spelling.
Noongar language is traditionally oral and has several dialects, so you’ll see it written many ways: Waugal, Waagal, Wargyl, Waakal, Ngunnunguddy Gnuditj, and more. All refer to the same being.

This massive rainbow serpent is a creator in Noongar stories. During the Nyitting, or “the cold times,” the Wagyl slithered across what is now southwest WA, shaping the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River). Where its body dragged, rivers formed, and where it rested, lakes appeared.

But it didn’t clock out after creation. Noongar people know the Wagyl as a guardian of fresh water. It still lives in the deep pools and bends of the river. Elders say if the river’s healthy, the Wagyl’s happy. If it’s not, then you’ve got a bigger problem than a spooky cryptid sighting.

Unlike European river entities, the Wagyl isn’t here to drown you for fun. It is law, land, and life force all rolled into one. Disrespect the water or the country, and you’re disrespecting the Wagyl.

It’s not just in the river. It's the reason the river exists.

Local to Perth?
You’ve probably walked beside it. Kings Park, Matagarup, even the Causeway. That’s all Wagyl Country.

This is a living story for Noongar people, not a myth. I’m not Noongar, just sharing public info to honor the land I live on. If you want to learn more, Kaartdijin Noongar and the South West Aboriginal Land & Sea Council have great resources from Noongar elders.

What should I cover next for Folklore Friday? 👇

Hey Magical Creatures

I know I’ve gone a little quiet lately and I just wanted to pop in and say sorry for disappearing for a bit. Life has been a little heavy behind the scenes and I’ve needed some time to rest, reset and just exist for a while.

To make things even more magical, my period is currently kicking my ass 😅 and with us moving through a waxing moon here in Perth, everything feels a little more intense emotionally and physically right now.

I’m slowly finding my way back though, and I’ve missed this little community more than you know 🖤 Thank you for sticking around while I recharge my batteries and honour what my body clearly needed.

More witchy posts, folklore, herbs and magical goodness coming again soon.

🔍 Crystal Spotlight: Chrysoprase

Chrysoprase is a vibrant green variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. Its distinctive apple-green colour comes from trace amounts of nickel within the stone, rather than iron like many other green minerals.

It is most notably found in Australia, particularly in Queensland and Western Australia, making it one of the country’s most recognised gemstones. Chrysoprase forms in weathered nickel-rich deposits, often developing in earthy, iron-rich soils over long periods of time.

Energetically, Chrysoprase is most commonly associated with the Heart Chakra. It is traditionally linked to emotional balance, growth, and renewal. Many people work with it to encourage optimism, support personal change, and bring a sense of calm during times of transition.

Because of its strong connection to both earth and heart energy, Chrysoprase is often used in meditation, carried as a personal stone, or kept nearby when focusing on emotional wellbeing and steady growth.

💚 Have you worked with Chrysoprase before?

✨🌙 Tarot Tuesday – The Star 🌙✨

The Star is a gentle card, one that speaks of hope, healing, and renewal. When it appears upright, it often comes after a difficult time, reminding you that peace is returning and that things are slowly falling back into place.

Reversed, The Star can reflect moments of doubt, negativity, or feeling disconnected from hope. It’s a soft nudge to reconnect with yourself and remember that even the smallest spark can lead you out of the dark.

✨ Tonight’s reflection:
Where in your life do you need a little more hope right now?

Take it one step at a time. The light is still there… even if it feels far away. 🌙

Candle colours in witchcraft - what does each one mean?
it's not just aesthetics! In candle magick, colour carries energy and intention. Here's your quick reference guide 🌙✨

◽White - Purification, peace, new beginnings, and protection. The all-purpose candle. White can substitute for any colour in a pinch.

◼Black - Banishing, protection, releasing negativity, and shadow work. Black absorbs and transforms, a deeply powerful colour, not something to fear.

🔴Red - Passion, love, courage, vitality, and desire. Used in love spells and rituals calling for bold energy and strength.

🩷Pink - Gentle love, self-care, friendship, and compassion. Where red is fiery, pink is soft and nurturing, perfect for healing the heart.

🔶Orange - Creativity, ambition, success, and attraction. Great for career spells, drawing opportunities, and boosting confidence.

⭐Yellow - Intellect, clarity, communication, and joy. Linked to the sun and air element, ideal for study, travel, and mental focus.

💚Green - Abundance, money, fertility, growth, and healing. One of the most-used colours in prosperity and nature magick.

🔷Blue - Calm, truth, wisdom, healing, and psychic awareness. Light blue soothes; dark blue deepens intuition and spiritual connection.

💜Purple - Psychic power, divination, spirituality, and wisdom. The colour of the third eye, ideal for meditation and connecting with higher realms.

💿Silver - The moon, intuition, dreams, and the divine feminine. Used in lunar rituals and to enhance psychic gifts.

🌞Gold - The sun, success, wealth, and divine masculine energy. Powerful for drawing in luck, fame, and solar blessings.

🩵Teal / Turquoise - Emotional healing, communication, and balance. Bridges the heart and throat, helping with honest expression and inner peace.

Remember, intention is everything. The colour sets the energy, but your focus and will are what truly power the magick. 🔥

Which colour do you reach for most often? Tell us in the comments! 👇

🕯️ The Magic of Candles - A Brief History

Long before electricity lit our homes, fire was the sacred heartbeat of ritual. Candles have been central to witchcraft and folk magic for thousands of years and their power hasn't dimmed one bit. 🔥

Ancient Egyptians and Romans used oil lamps and tapers in ceremonial worship, believing flame carried prayers directly to the gods. Early cunning folk and wise women incorporated candles into their hearth magic, using different colours, herbs, and intentions to manifest healing, protection, and love.

By the medieval period, the Church had both condemned and co-opted candle rituals. Lighting them for saints while accusing folk practitioners of using them for "dark" purposes. The irony? Many of those same folk practices survived underground, quietly passed down through generations.

Today, modern Wiccans, hedge witches, and eclectic practitioners continue this ancient flame-tending tradition. Whether you're dressing a candle with oils, carving sigils into wax, or simply sitting in quiet intention as it burns. You're part of a thread that stretches back millennia.

The flame remembers. 🕯️✨
