The Morrígan belongs to the places where courage and fear meet.
In early Irish mythology, she is deeply connected with warfare, fate, sovereignty and prophecy. She does not remain safely outside the conflict. She enters it, influences it and sometimes foretells its ending.
Her relationship with Cú Chulainn in the Táin Bó Cúailnge reveals just how formidable she could be.
After he rejects her approach, the Morrígan tells him she will meet him in battle. She comes against him in different forms, including an eel, a wolf and a hornless red heifer, interfering as he fights.
Later, wounded and disguised as an old woman milking a cow, she encounters him again. Unaware of who she is, Cú Chulainn blesses her as she gives him milk, and each blessing heals one of her wounds.
Their stories remain intertwined until his death.
When Cú Chulainn finally falls, tradition tells of a crow settling upon him, signalling that the great warrior is truly gone. The crow and raven would become enduring symbols of the Morrígan, creatures of the battlefield that arrive when fighting has ended and fate has already spoken.
This is what makes her so compelling.
The Morrígan is not merely a goddess of battle.
She stands beside transformation, sovereignty and the knowledge that every struggle eventually demands something from us.
She does not teach us never to fall.
She reminds us to know who we are when the battlefield changes us.
The Morrígan does not remove the battle.
She awakens the part of you capable of meeting it.
