What we’re reading🌀

Shannon recently read and lover Kindred by Octavia Butler.

‘Octavia Butler’s speculative work is just as groundbreaking as it was when it was published in 1979.

Dana, our young protagonist, finds herself with an uncontrollable ability to time travel, switching between her present 1970s and America’s antebellum south. Her ability seems to be tied to a young, white boy whose father is a slaver owner.

Butler draws parallels between the past and present through this story of race, belonging, love and family. Her deft talent reminded me of the timelessness and universality of James Baldwin’s non-fiction.

For fans of The Parable of the Sower and Toni Morrison.’
