Spotted Gum, finished and handed over.

The colour is the whole appeal. Reds, honey, and deep brown run through the one species, so no two boards look the same, and a floor never reads flat.

It is also one of the hardest we supply at 11.0 kN, which is why it ends up in so many family homes. Dogs, kids, chairs dragged across it at dinner. It handles all of that and keeps looking like this.

Now the honest part. At 6.7 on the Janka scale it is the softest timber in our range. Softer does not mean fragile, it means a heavy dining chair dragged across it will mark more readily than it would on Spotted Gum. In a bedroom or a study, rarely an issue. In a hallway with a large dog, worth a conversation.

Plenty of people run it right through the house anyway, because they want that colour and they are happy with a floor that shows its history. Perfectly legitimate.

We would rather tell you upfront than have you find out later.

Carpet out, Black Walnut in. But the interesting part is what happened in between.

Under the carpet were the original boards, and some of them moved. Every loose or squeaky one gets screwed down before anything else happens, because a subfloor that shifts will eventually show up in the floor you walk on. Acoustic underlay went down after that.

Then the details that take the extra time. The boards run underneath the wardrobe rail rather than stopping at it, so the doors sit over the top and the floor reads as one continuous surface. Same under the kitchen cabinets.

62 square metres and fifteen steps. Most of the work that matters happened before the first board was laid.

Most people choose a species on colour, then find out about hardness later.

Worth doing it the other way around, at least for the rooms that cop the most traffic. The Janka scale measures how well a timber resists denting. For a home with dogs or a busy hallway, 8.0 kN and up is the sensible range, which puts Grey Ironbark, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt and Jarrah in play.

Softer species are not lesser. Black Walnut at 6.7 and French Oak at 6.5 are two of the most beautiful floors we sell. They just belong in bedrooms, formal living rooms, and studies rather than the hallway the dog sprints down.

You can mix. Plenty of homes run a harder species through the living areas and something softer in the bedrooms.

Timber moves. That has always been the problem with wide boards.

Mark explains how Stabilised Solid gets around it. The core is cross-laminated hardwood, the same Australian species as the surface, with the grain running in alternating directions. Movement gets absorbed inside the board rather than transmitted to the floor you walk on.

Which is why a wide board no longer has to be a thick one to stay stable.

American Black Walnut. You will not find it in many Perth showrooms.

Deep chocolate browns, a fine straight grain, and a smooth satin finish. It is the darkest timber in our range and easily the most distinctive. Walk into a room with a walnut floor, and you notice it immediately.

We build it on the same Stabilised Solid construction as the rest of the range, so the technology underneath is identical. What changes is the character on top.

Measured, glued, laid. Repeat a few hundred times.

This is French Oak in Limed Wash going into an upstairs hallway, carrying on down the stairs so the timber runs continuously between floors. Adhesive goes down, the board goes in, and it gets checked against the run before it. Every single one.

Hallways and stairs are the fussiest part of any job. Narrow spaces, more cuts, and nowhere to hide a measurement that is a millimetre off.

Two things fall out of that. Wider boards no longer need to be thicker to stay stable. And the milling uses far more of each log than conventional cutting does.

Tiles out, Spotted Gum in.

It was a white kitchen sitting on old tile, and it read cold. The timber gives the room something to sit on, and suddenly the same cabinetry looks warm instead of clinical.

Most floors get replaced. This one gets sanded back.

Tallowwood, in a home that has clearly been lived in. There is enough genuine hardwood in the wear layer for four sands over the life of the floor. Each one takes off about half a millimetre and brings the surface back to new.

In a normal Perth home, that means refreshing it every fifteen to twenty years, rather than pulling it out and starting again.

That is why we can hold a lifetime structural warranty on it, and why we hold it ourselves rather than passing it to a factory overseas.
