Vampire Squid and The Book of Sea Monsters by Prema Arasu are here to remind you to love all the things in the deep.

Prema is running the February-March WFAC Speculative Writing Course and there are still spots left, so if you want to start off 2026 with some wonderful creativity, hit up the link (in Bio on Insta, and in previous Prema Arasu post from Stef on FB) and get yourself some time with the creator of these two awesome books.

Vampire Squid is a collection of poems written during post-doc research at the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre. They are quirky, funny, dark, and deep in every way, including an Ode on a Blobfish, and 'things we found 10925m deep and/or at IKEA'. (Two of my personal favourites, though it is very hard to choose just two).

The Book of Sea Monsters is a collection of creatures, looking at all sorts of deep-sea tales through the history of literature seeking to interrogate the idea of sea monsters themselves. With stories and poems, chapters and references, from as early as the writings of Pliny the Elder to the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle, this a beautifully illustrated and wonderfully diverse school of deep-sea fish (and not fish).

Check out any and all of the above and keep an eye on our socials for upcoming events with Prema!

I believe the phrase is "At last!!"

We have the new Jim Butcher book at last!!

We also have the paperback edition of Dungeon Crawler Carl, at last!

And we have a lot of both, so come in and get Twelve Months, the eighteenth book of the Dresden Files, and pick up the shenanigan-filled internet-loved phenomenon by Matt Dinniman, now in a far more portable format.

Hey Folkies,

If you've been thinking about doing a bit of writing of your own, it might interest you to know that there are still some spots left in the February-March WFAC speculative writing course.

It's being run by Prema Arasu, author of Vampire Squid & The Book of Sea Monsters (both of which are awesome and in store by the way).

If your new year's resolution was to write, this would be a pretty good way to get that ball rolling.

Also, watch this space for more upcoming events with Prema.

Thus the shop is empty, as is my mug of tea, and we've reached the end of the year!

This year has taken its sweet time and simultaneously flown by. With a constant supply of new books, new authors, and a cracking amount of local talent, it's been a good year to be reading genre fiction.

Many, many thanks to all our wonderful regulars who are always bringing in new friends, to everyone who filled up the store on book launch days, and the pub on author event nights. Thank you to all the authors who dropped in and shared their stories with us. (And thanks to Stef for the delightful work year, I'll have another, ta!)

We're off New Year's Day but will be back in again on the 2nd of Jan, but until then happy new year! Happy holiday reading, and let's all do it again in 2026!

Ok folkies, thats me done for another Christmas frenzy. But the madness isn't quite done and we'll be seeing out the year with our Boxing Day sale (that actually goes for six days, but whatever).

So we'll be closed tomorrow but back again on the 26th from 11am with a massive 20% off store-wide, including art portfolios and collections, special and limited editions and even sprayed edge pretties!

And the sale continues through to close of business on the 31st, so you've got six days to plunder the goodies and help us excavate the store!
