They enthralled us with a grand plan which sounded easy and profitable: we would raid a goods van as it sat at the railway siding, which contained tea boxes full of lollies and chocolates. We were game, and of course didn’t think twice about the consequences."

For many years, readers have asked me what life was like before the Army. The answer is in this book.

'Hail Mary, the Creek's Up' takes me back to a childhood spent on the banks of the Castlereagh River in country New South Wales. It was a time of family, friendships, mischief and plenty of life lessons. It's a story about the people who shaped me long before I wore a uniform, especially the five remarkable women whose love and guidance stayed with me throughout my life.

Writing these memories has been a privilege, and I hope they bring back a few memories of your own.
