The platypus is one of the very few mammals that can produce venom, along with a small group of others like certain shrews.
Male platypuses have a venomous spur on their hind legs, which they use mainly during breeding season to compete with other males.
The venom is not deadly to humans but can cause intense pain and swelling.
Interestingly, female platypuses do not have functional venom spurs.
This unique trait makes the platypus one of the most unusual mammals in the animal kingdom.
