April Boat Report- Jurien Bay 2 Day Comp
The new date had been set for the annual Jurien Bay 2 day comp to
the ANZAC long weekend to try improve our chances with better conditions. We attracted 9 boats with 21 anglers signing on for this one, numbers slightly lower than the usual J-bay two dayer in September.
We had a very reasonable forecast for this one with winds under 14 knots and the swell being friendlier than expected. With the FADS still deployed and pelagic action being on fire we where sure to see some decent fished brought over the scales.
We had plenty of Blue Fin Tuna caught and notably it was Dawn Cass who mentioned it was her first one weighed in at a comp! Dawn also weighed in her first Mullaway to go with- nice work. We had plenty of Mullaway come through the scales and it was Elliot Tunahursts 10.8kg that took out the biggest for the weekend. A few boats managed to work the FADS and where rewarded with dolphin fish. We had about ten sitting along side the boat just following up a wound in dredge, slippery suckers would not take a hook though! Sally and Scotty G had the pick of the dollies and I am pretty sure as normal, Sally had the bigger one out of the two. Only the one Yellow Tail King weighed in for the comp. After getting railed by some solid ones I managed to coax a 13Kg model to the boat!
Into the weigh in we had the one Mini Junior Taylor Gauci represent. Taylor fished with grandad and 2 species, 2 heaviest,275grams with 32.6 points. In the Juniors also a lone soldier fishing with grandad was Jade Gauci. Jade had 1 specie, also the heaviest, 148 grams with 16.3 points. The girls getting it done whilst mum and dad went out wider.
We had a few vets make it for this one and in third with 3 species, 1 heaviest, 1.03kg and 38.1 points was Clive Powell. In second and we do not say this much was Terry Bell. Terry had 5 species, 4 heaviest, 14.84kg and 103.7 points. In first with 8 species, 5 heaviest, 6.57kg and 123.1 points was Phil Pollard- well done mate.
Onto the ladies divi in third with 2 species, 4.949kg and 29.9 points was Belinda Mallon. In second with a solid bag was Dawn Cass. Dawn had 5 species, 4 heaviest, 11.45kg and 96.9 points. Taking out the chocolates in first was Sally G with 7 species, 6 heaviest, 8.12kg and 122.2 points!
Into the boys and it was a shootout between deckie and skipper for second. In third with 8 species, 1 heaviest, 7.64kg and 101.3 points was Chuckie. Just taking second with 7 species, 2 heaviest, 9.83kg and 101.7 points was Tony O'Sullivan! Sooo close. in first with a very solid bag for Jurien with no demersals was myself. Buckets had 10 species, 2 heaviest, 24.74kg and 161.5 points- belted my deckie RED!
Sausage sizzle was on thanks to Belinda for cooking up.
After the weigh in we got the fire pit out to sit around and spill some yarns about the weekend. Lil Joe and Chuckie seen that not many would be standing to close to fire this year as the flames went higher than the shed!
Having this comp on the ANZAC long weekend did not have the same "feel" about it and numbers did show.
Hopefully once our new calendar is up we can all have some input on how we can get it back to the norm again with as many involved as possible.
Cheers to terry for once again having no issues with us holding the comp at the house, very much appreciated.
Next Boat comp is 2 day May Comp held in Perth.

Gday every
Regarding our 2 day boat comp this weekend.
Weather is looking off chops! 5-10knots east all weekend with zero swell 😍😍😍.
Start time is 6am on Saturday morning and 4pm weigh in at the club on Sunday.
You can fish anywhere on our coast for this one just no demersals at our weigh in. Must be noted that you can also start from Rottnest island at 6am. This was a new rule voted in at our last AGM.
I will update our fish release code on Friday evening.
If anyone is chasing and further information regarding please reach out.
Side quest,
We have had a few crew up north recently taking advantage to nab some demersals for the freezer. Some great catches including Naylor monster trout that will be our new club record! Mint fish buddy and one of my favourite to eat.
Until Friday

Month: MAY 2026
Section: Beach Fishing

May is arguably the best time of the year to target Mulloway and paired with a full moon I was quietly confident someone would find a Silver Ghost. But with some slightly questionable weather forecasts and w**d thick from coast to coast it was clear it wasn’t going to be an easy feat.

On the Sunday afternoon, 14 members eventually weighed in and while there wasn’t a huge number of fish caught across the board there were 3 of these elusive Silver Ghosts hitting the scales, which was great to see. And as fate would have it, the heaviest of them all was caught by my young fella; Crew Bell.

He has now mastered the art of casting his 12ft low mount surf rod, and while he may only be able to cast 20-30m at a guess, it was clearly more than enough to land right on the nose of a nice Mulloway that weighed just over 20kg.

The fight was unreal and I was even guessing it was a Sambo for most of the battle as this thing had some serious go about it. In fact, at one point Crew said he was going to have to check himself into the hospital when he landed the fish as his back was so sore, but he pushed through and the smiles where from ear to ear when it hit the sand!

In my opinion this is not just a testament to his ability, but also to how good the gear is nowadays. Purpose built graphite surf rods that a 7-year-old (with some practice) can cast and fish with all day, is definitely not something I grew up with. I’d whole heartedly recommend that if you are in the market, to go see Rob at Getaway outdoors in Balcatta, to check out the range of Assassin Rods - You will be blown away!

Anyways onto some results…

Starting as always with the Mini Juniors.
Taj Davis went searching for Salmon with his Dad; Luke but unfortunately didn’t have any luck. He did however land 4 species and had all 4 heaviest, including 1 overall heaviest species which was a Whiting. This bag placed him in second this month.
As mentioned before Crew had a cracker of a comp, he had 6 species, with a total bag weight of 21.06kg,169 points which firmly secured him in 1st place.

In the Ladies, Bron Gaston had a tougher weekend than usual taking out 3rd place.
In second this month was Carolyn Benniman with 2 species and 2 heaviest including a cracker of a KG Whiting. But once again it was Helen Brownfield taking out first place with her 5 species bag, proving she really is a force to be reconned with this season.

Onto the Vets, where as always, it is hotly contested. Vince Cox had a good weekend with 6 species and 3 heaviest, coming in 3rd place. Ricko came in 2nd place with 9 species; including a very nice Pink Snapper of 5.39kg. But it was Clive Powell who came through with the goods this month. His bag of 8 species, 5 heaviest and a total bag weight of over 14kg was plenty enough to secure 1st place. Clive’s bag also included a very respectable Mulloway of 7.28kg

On to the Men’s where we saw some pretty average results to be honest. I came in 3rd place, with only 4 species, Kiwi managed second place with 5 species and 4 heaviest. But once again it was Joe Wettinger on top. He had a standout bag of 10 species, 5 heaviest and nearly 10kg of bag weight. His bag also included that 3rd Mulloway I mentioned, while only small at just under 2kg, it’s a welcome site in anyone’s bag.

Alright so that’s a wrap from me once again. Thankyou as always to everyone who helps me out to run these comps/ weigh ins. I couldn’t do it without you all.

Our next competition with be our away competition at Port Gregory on the 30th / 31st of May, it’s always a great weekend so I hope to see big numbers there. As always with our away events we will provide nibbles and a sausage sizzle during and after the weigh in. I Look forward to seeing you all there and if anyone has any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call or text message.

Cheers

Month: APRIL 2026
Section: Beach Fishing
Another comp and another wedding for me — that’s 3 for the season so far. At this rate, I reckon I qualify for some sort of handicap! In future, if you’re thinking of inviting me to your wedding, please check the angling section calendar before locking in the date.
But in all seriousness, I had a great time, even if I’ll unfortunately be doing my report based more on what I heard than what I experienced over the weekend. From all accounts, the weather wasn’t great — but what’s new? The fishing, however, sounded absolutely red hot.
Rob Yates had a bit of a mishap (similar to one I managed a couple of weeks ago myself) and got well and truly stuck in the seaw**d bog holes at Lancelin. The situation ended up requiring not one, but two recovery vehicles to come to the rescue after the first also found itself in a bit of a pickle.
Luckily, someone managed to snap a few photos for the rest of us to enjoy. It’s not much fun when you’re the one stuck out there mate, I know that firsthand, but it certainly makes for a good story afterwards.
The rest of the section mostly fished their usual haunts and thankfully avoided any similarly adventurous weekends.
Unfortunately, there were no Mini Juniors or Juniors weighing in this round, which was disappointing to see. With such a strong number of members now fishing the boat comps, it does make you wonder why we can’t get a few more juniors involved as well. If anyone has any ideas (short of me taking them all out myself) I’d be more than happy to look into ways we can encourage a bit more participation.
In the Ladies section, only 2 weighed in this month. Bron Gaston snagged 5 species which took out 2nd place and it was Helen Brownfield with her 6 species bag that ended up in first. There is a fair battle between these two ladies this season which is great to see.

In the Veterans, Mick Lock had an impressive 9 species bag, but, with little weight and only 2 heaviest, it was only enough for 3rd place. Terry Bell had 7 species but with more weight and more heaviest, managed to sneak into 2nd place.
But this month it was Ricko with 10 species and a total bag weight of over 6.5kg who easily took out the win. His bag included some nice fish such as a Pink Snapper of 4.14kg and a cracker KG Whiting of 283g.

And lastly, the Men’s. Mitchell Bell had a 6 species bag which was enough for 3rd place. Rob Yates must have found some fish while he was stuck in the w**d because he had a respectable bag of 8 species, taking out 2nd place. Which takes us to 1st place which was taken out by the ever-consistent Joe Wettinger. He had an absolute cracker of a weekend resulting in 13 species, 9 of which were heaviest of species and a bag weight of nearly 11kg which totalled 227points. Well done mate that’s a great bag on any weekend!

A special mention to Graeme Cole, while he only weighed in 5 species, all 5 of them were overall heaviest of species. Not sure anyone has ever had a result like that before so well done to you too mate.

Anyways that concludes this little write up. Please remember the upcoming Port Gregory away competition which is on weekend of the 30/31st of May. It’s set to be a great weekend and one not to be missed.

Our next normal Beach comp is on the 2nd/3rd of May, so I hope to see you all there.

Cheers

Good morning all.
Just a reminder that our May Beach Fishing Competition is on this weekend.
Weathers looking slightly average on the Saturday but Sunday looks pretty good.
All in all nothing we are not used to and I’m sure we can all push through and find some fish.

Usual stuff, no set boundries. 5am start Saturday, 4pm weigh in Sunday at the club.

Any other questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Gday everyone.
Regarding our two day boat comp this weekend in J-Bay.
This current low pressure system is pushing through and we will have some decent weather to fish over the weekend. Not going to be glass off but looks like it will be under 15knots most of weekend. It’s been a while since we have had any swell to contend with and it will be pumping so be careful around the outer reefs!
Start time 6am Saturday with a 4pm weigh in at Terrys old ranch on the Sunday.
Will have a sausage sizzle running at the weigh in along with our raffle ticket sheets.
My crew are heading up tomorrow morning and will be at pub tomorrow arvo for a feed and will be watching the footy.
I will also clarify the FAD locations with the local tackle shop owner and post up the current coordinates on our messenger page. The FADS have been hot and everything from dolphin fish, wahoo, mackies , yellow fin, big Marlin are all being caught from them.
It would be good to see all who voted to have this comp changed from our original September J-Bay comp to this new ANZAC weekend comp attend!
I will update our catch n release code tomorrow afternoon.
If anyone is chasing further information please reach out.
Personally looking forward to getting out of Perth for the weekend🍻🍻
