Section: Beach Fishing
May is arguably the best time of the year to target Mulloway and paired with a full moon I was quietly confident someone would find a Silver Ghost. But with some slightly questionable weather forecasts and w**d thick from coast to coast it was clear it wasn’t going to be an easy feat.
On the Sunday afternoon, 14 members eventually weighed in and while there wasn’t a huge number of fish caught across the board there were 3 of these elusive Silver Ghosts hitting the scales, which was great to see. And as fate would have it, the heaviest of them all was caught by my young fella; Crew Bell.
He has now mastered the art of casting his 12ft low mount surf rod, and while he may only be able to cast 20-30m at a guess, it was clearly more than enough to land right on the nose of a nice Mulloway that weighed just over 20kg.
The fight was unreal and I was even guessing it was a Sambo for most of the battle as this thing had some serious go about it. In fact, at one point Crew said he was going to have to check himself into the hospital when he landed the fish as his back was so sore, but he pushed through and the smiles where from ear to ear when it hit the sand!
In my opinion this is not just a testament to his ability, but also to how good the gear is nowadays. Purpose built graphite surf rods that a 7-year-old (with some practice) can cast and fish with all day, is definitely not something I grew up with. I’d whole heartedly recommend that if you are in the market, to go see Rob at Getaway outdoors in Balcatta, to check out the range of Assassin Rods - You will be blown away!
Anyways onto some results…
Starting as always with the Mini Juniors.
Taj Davis went searching for Salmon with his Dad; Luke but unfortunately didn’t have any luck. He did however land 4 species and had all 4 heaviest, including 1 overall heaviest species which was a Whiting. This bag placed him in second this month.
As mentioned before Crew had a cracker of a comp, he had 6 species, with a total bag weight of 21.06kg,169 points which firmly secured him in 1st place.
In the Ladies, Bron Gaston had a tougher weekend than usual taking out 3rd place.
In second this month was Carolyn Benniman with 2 species and 2 heaviest including a cracker of a KG Whiting. But once again it was Helen Brownfield taking out first place with her 5 species bag, proving she really is a force to be reconned with this season.
Onto the Vets, where as always, it is hotly contested. Vince Cox had a good weekend with 6 species and 3 heaviest, coming in 3rd place. Ricko came in 2nd place with 9 species; including a very nice Pink Snapper of 5.39kg. But it was Clive Powell who came through with the goods this month. His bag of 8 species, 5 heaviest and a total bag weight of over 14kg was plenty enough to secure 1st place. Clive’s bag also included a very respectable Mulloway of 7.28kg
On to the Men’s where we saw some pretty average results to be honest. I came in 3rd place, with only 4 species, Kiwi managed second place with 5 species and 4 heaviest. But once again it was Joe Wettinger on top. He had a standout bag of 10 species, 5 heaviest and nearly 10kg of bag weight. His bag also included that 3rd Mulloway I mentioned, while only small at just under 2kg, it’s a welcome site in anyone’s bag.
Alright so that’s a wrap from me once again. Thankyou as always to everyone who helps me out to run these comps/ weigh ins. I couldn’t do it without you all.
Our next competition with be our away competition at Port Gregory on the 30th / 31st of May, it’s always a great weekend so I hope to see big numbers there. As always with our away events we will provide nibbles and a sausage sizzle during and after the weigh in. I Look forward to seeing you all there and if anyone has any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call or text message.
Cheers
