A little of Acorn History
Acorn Garden Centre has been trading at Point Clare since 1975. The large Barn-style building has an interesting past, originally built and used as a plasterboard factory. In the 70’s the building was converted and used as an art and gift gallery with some plants being grown on site and sold as well. There’s even been a fully equipped aquarium department, with over 40 fis

h tanks, featuring more than one hundred species of temperate and tropical fish. Over the years just like a growing tree Acorn became larger, spreading its branches and settling its roots deep in the local community. In 2008 new owners brought fresh ideas, high standards and progress to the nursery, rekindling the interest of local gardeners. The re-introduction of the Gift Gallery with its quirky and well presented displays has seen it become a destination of its own right. The owners and staff settled in quickly and have become greatly valued amongst the loyal patrons. In 2011 Acorn won a national online competition and was voted Austraflora Retail Garden Centre of the Year. In 2012 PlantsPlus recognized Acorn with the following awards: Highest Greenlife Sales Growth NSW and Highest Overall Growth NSW, a fantastic achievement within the 27 members of the NSW PlantsPlus group. Most recently in 2013 Acorn was placed in the top three finalists at the PlantsPlus Garden Centre of the Year NSW Awards Gala Event. Acorn has been servicing the Central Coast with plants, advice and garden supplies for over 40 years. It is an award winning business, loved by many local gardeners. Do you want a Strawberry 🍓 that confuses the birds and tastes great?

Then you need one of these!
Our famous Pineapple Strawberries are ready and looking fantastic!!! We have been growing these beauties in the nursery. And they are ready to go go go! 🏎️🏎️🏎️

Pineapple Strawberries are a cross between the traditional red strawberry and the rare Chilean white strawberry. Combining the best of both worlds. The flavour of a red strawberry, with the amazing pineapple fragrance and colour of the rare Chilean white. Not only do they taste great, but they are just plain fun to grow. And a wonderful addition to any veggie patch. Or better yet, grow them in a pot. Or better yet, plant them in a hanging basket!

Now is the perfect time to time to plant them to get fresh strawberries for spring. They are looking great and actively growing. Pineapple Strawberries are not self pollinating like the red. So make sure to combination plant them with red strawberries 🍓 for a great harvest.

Have you seen our beautiful Rose of Sharon Hibiscus?

This is our wonderfully hardy form of Hibiscus mutabilis The Rose Of Sharon with full Double Flowers. Native to China and Taiwan. They are famous in the western gardens for their magical, colour-changing blooms. They produces large, ruffled, saucer-shaped flowers that open white in the morning, gradually shift to pink by midday, and deepen to dark red or pink by evening. The name mutabilis is Latin for "changeable”, describing the colour transition of the flowers as the temperature and sunlight exposure changes through the day. Individual blooms last for only one day, but the plant continuously produces new flowers from summer all the way through autumn and in our case right into mid winter.

This stunning hibiscus can grow to reach 3 - 5m in height if left un-pruned. We however prune our plants regularly to keep them around 1.5m high and full of beautiful blooms!

They are know to be deciduous, with our plants retain their leaves and flowering right into mid winter. Only experiencing a few shorts weeks without leaves and flowers. Our above pictures have been take today in early winter.

These hibiscus love full sun or part shade. They do like a rich soil if possible. So mix plenty of fertiliser such as our EarthLife Flower Blend and some compost in at planting. A regular water will keep them full and lush, and they are surprisingly tolerant of wet positions in the garden. They also tolerate our extreme heat and drought at our nursery through our long hot dry summers.

They make a fantastic flowering shrub, and one well worth growing in any garden. They can also be grown in pots with a regular prune. Have you got a spot for one of these stunning Hibiscus?

What does a girl need to do to get a sleep in?

Our resident little girl is not very impressed this morning. She has managed to find a way into our store room. And was fast asleep inside one of our stored propagation heat mats. We’re not sure who got the bigger fright. Miss possum, or us. Either way, she now has a much nicer and comfier home in a hollow branch. One where a nice lazy sleep in is far more likely. 😴💤

Our Snow Poppy are in full bloom!
Have you grown these little beauties before?

Eomecon chionantha or more easily pronounced Snow Poppy 😉 is a wonderful shade loving ground cover that hails from China. Best grown in shady or part shady positions in a rich and moist soil. However they can survive periods of drought. They grows wonderfully in these often hard positions in the garden. And slowly sucker to form a wonderfully dense mat. It’s round glaucous green leaves trap water droplets like glistening pearls. Adding to its charm in the garden.

Snow poppies flower for quite a period. Through winter and spring, often finishing around Christmas for us. They are named after the pure Snow White colour of their flowers. And are not able to tolerate snows or heavy frosts. They make a wonderful addition to shady or part sunny spots in the garden. And also do well in pots. A charming plant from our collection that is not often available in nurseries. And one we highly recommend.

We have grown some beautiful plants which are in bud and flower in the nursery. Come in and get one before they all go.

Take a look at these Yanchep Rose!

Diplolaena angustifolia or Yanchep Rose as it’s more commonly called, is a fantastic native shrub that hails from the coastal plains of Western Australia.

It is evergreen, growing to about 1 or 1.5m. It is highly prized in native gardens for its striking bell shaped flowers. Flowering in winter and spring, the red to orange fluffy flowers are wrapped in green felty bracts. They are loaded with nectar and pollen. And are a magnet for bees, butterflies, birds and pollinator insects.

They thrive in well drained sandy soils in sunny or full sun positions. And are fantastic in coastal areas where poor soils and windy conditions exist. In heavier soils, amend with sand and plant in a raised mound. I’m going to be growing mine in a beautiful pot. Using our free draining native potting mix. And quick feed with our Garden Delight rock minerals. They are full of buds and will flower for months!

Better get in quick before they all go. We only have a few plants left in the nursery. And I’m not letting mine go! 🤣💐

Winter is Protea Time!
And this little beauty is a miniature King Protea.

It grows more like a ground cover than a protea. Only reaching 75cm high, but spreading to around 1 - 1.2m wide.
Short strong flower stems hold its large long lasting flowers directly upright. What a beauty it is! And its flower buds are stunning in their own right. Held well above the foliage, their silvery pink tones contrasting with its deep green foliage. They provide wonderful colour in the garden all Autumn and Winter long. And they make a wonderful cut flower.

Autumn Prince is perfect for pots, or as a ground cover. They love a sunny spot. And well drained soil.

One of definitely going home with me! I have just the spot for one. Have you got a spot for one of these little charmers?

An oldie but a goodie! And still one of our favourites! They are putting on a real show in the nursery now!
The Witches Hat or Hedgehog Sage, named after both its flower shape and seed head when ripe.

This fantastic plant flowers winter, spring and into summer. My first experience with this plant, was picking flowers on the most horrendously hot day in February many years ago. The plant was growing at the base of a large gum tree. In terribly dry and water repellent soil. All the plants (and me 🤣) around it were wilting! Yet this plant was stunning! Vibrant, upright towering displays of bright cobalt blue flowers. A fantastic plant, that can be grown in many positions, Part sun, full sun, rich soils, poor soils, moist, dry. A wonderfully tough plant once established. A must have for any garden!
But It does like grow! So plant it at the back of a garden border where it can grow upright! It will reach around 2m H x 1m wide. Or, like me, you can prune it hard to keep it down in size to around 1m. It also does well in pots where it can be kept small to a perfect size.

If you haven’t grown one yet. You have to try! It will reward with much joy and colour.

Have you met Protea Susara?

This is one of our favourite proteas. She is a wonderfully hardy and compact protea. And an ideal choice for small gardens, rockeries and pots. This resilient protea thrives in low-maintenance settings, producing vibrant soft white pink flowers with an inner glow!

She flowers autumn and winter. And is a magnet for native nectar loving birds even though she is a bit exotic 😉! And provides a valuable food source through this winter period. Wonderful light pink flowers are long lasting and add much needed colour to the winter garden. They also make a fabulous cut flower. And a wonderful dried flower 💐

Drought, frost and coastal tolerant. She grows to a maximum 2.5m H x 2m W if left unpruned. Or prune her harder like we do, and keep in a pot at around 1m x 1m and full of flowers.
