It’s been a tough week here.

Not tough in the real sense of the word—but tough in the dahlia breeder sense. We had to cull some of our seedlings. 🌱✂️

This is only our second year growing our own blooms, and this year we were really chasing the whimsical types.

I’m fascinated by informal decorative and Fimbriated dahlias where the form is as round as possible, but the petals roll, twist, split and move in their own wonderfully unpredictable ways.

Controlled and consistent chaos. 😂

This particular bloom ticked a few of the whimsy boxes, but not much else. So we kept a few notes, put it through vase-life testing, assessed the tubers—and then had to be brutally honest.

It simply failed on too many criteria.

So, sadly, Whimsy met the compost heap. 💀🌸

Only two seedlings made the grade to grow on for another year.

That might sound disappointing, but this is part of the process. Breeding isn’t just about finding something beautiful. It’s about learning to assess the whole plant and having the discipline to let go when something doesn’t meet the standard!

And, of course, we live in hope that this year’s seedlings might just produce the one. ✨

Because somewhere in all that controlled chaos, there might be a future favourite waiting to emerge.

Somewhere over the rainbow,
where the winter rain has passed,
the paddocks turn to emerald,
and the clouds surrender at last.

There are rows yet waiting,
and seeds beneath the ground,
dreams tucked into little furrows,
where hope is quietly found.

Somewhere beneath that rainbow
are blooms we’ve yet to grow—
Dahlias waiting for the sunshine,
and gardens yet to show.

For every storm that passes,
there’s a little more to see;
a promise in the morning light,
a flower waiting patiently.

And somewhere over the rainbow,
we’ll keep dreaming as we do—
of colour, blooms and beautiful things,
and sharing them with you.

The Annual and Perennial Patch Expansion 🤪

It’s always great to dream, make plans and, most importantly, convince your husband that all the work will absolutely be worth it! 😂

There’s a lot of hard work ahead, but when you can see the vision, it makes every garden bed, every flower and every sore back just a little more worthwhile.

Here’s to dreaming big, getting our hands dirty and creating something beautiful. 🌸🌱

Now… just to convince the dream maker that daylight savings is around the corner Hahaha.

Dear Dahlia Diary:

The Story of Granite Queen Bee and Granite Embers

In the world of dahlias, some varieties are admired simply because they are beautiful. Others carry something more—a sense of place, a story, and the unmistakable fingerprint of the people who bred them.

Granite Queen Bee and Granite Embers are two such dahlias.

Both are creations of Malcolm and Betty Balch, highly respected figures in Australian horticulture whose contribution to the dahlia world extends far beyond the flowers they have bred. From their home in Stanthorpe, Queensland, in the heart of the Granite Belt, the Balchs have spent decades cultivating, breeding and championing dahlias—and, quite fittingly, their cultivars carry the name of the landscape that has surrounded their lives.

The “Granite” prefix is more than a breeder’s signature. It is a nod to the rugged country of the Granite Belt and a reminder that these flowers are distinctly Australian creations, born from generations of careful selection and a deep understanding of the dahlia.

Among their most celebrated introductions is Granite Queen Bee, an anemone dahlia with a personality that is impossible to overlook. Deep crimson-red outer petals frame a mass of ruffled inner florets, their golden tips catching the light like little sparks. The contrast between the rich outer petals and warm golden centre gives the flower both drama and charm.

It is the sort of dahlia that commands attention without needing to shout.

Then there is Granite Embers—a flower of an entirely different temperament.

A spectacular fimbriated incurved cactus, Granite Embers seems almost to glow from within. Its petals combine brilliant orange, golden yellow and salmon-pink, creating the impression of a fire at its brightest point. The heavily split and fringed petals twist inward towards the centre, giving the bloom an extraordinary sense of movement and texture.

The name could hardly be more appropriate. It looks like a handful of glowing coals caught in full bloom.

For the gardener, Granite Embers is a showstopper. For the exhibitor, its form, texture and colour combination make it particularly intriguing. It is a flower that rewards close inspection—the more you look, the more detail appears within those finely divided petals.

Together, Granite Queen Bee and Granite Embers demonstrate the remarkable diversity that can emerge from a single breeding program. One is rich, poised and almost regal; the other is fiery, intricate and flamboyant. Yet both carry the unmistakable character of the Balchs’ work.

And behind those flowers is a remarkable horticultural partnership.

Malcolm and Betty have not only bred dahlias; they have devoted themselves to the wider dahlia community. Both have held senior executive roles with the Dahlia Society of Australia, with Betty serving as Secretary and Malcolm as Treasurer. Their contribution reflects a commitment to the hobby that encompasses breeding, exhibition, administration and the preservation of Australia’s dahlia heritage.

Their passions, however, extend well beyond the garden.

The same dedication they bring to cultivating flowers is evident in their work as wildlife carers. Through their involvement with the Granite Belt Wildlife Carers, Malcolm and Betty have helped rescue and rehabilitate native wildlife, including kangaroos, koalas and birds of prey.

Perhaps there is something fitting about that combination.

To breed a great dahlia requires patience. To care for wildlife requires patience too. Both demand observation, persistence and an appreciation for the small details that can determine whether something merely survives or truly thrives.

Granite Queen Bee and Granite Embers are therefore more than two beautiful names on a dahlia list. They are part of the living legacy of two people who have spent decades nurturing plants, animals and the horticultural community around them.

And every time one of these extraordinary flowers opens, somewhere in its petals is a little piece of the Granite Belt.

🌱 Have You Had Your Soil Tested? 🌱

Before you plant, fertilise, or troubleshoot problems in the garden, it’s worth knowing what is happening beneath the surface.

A simple soil pH test is a great place to start. While a comprehensive laboratory soil analysis will always provide the most detailed picture, an at-home pH test is an easy and affordable way to better understand your soil and make informed decisions.

Soil pH plays a vital role in plant health because it influences nutrient availability, microbial activity, and overall soil performance.

🌿 Nutrient Availability
The pH of your soil determines which nutrients are available for plants to absorb. In acidic soils, elements such as iron and manganese can become overly available, while in alkaline soils, nutrients like phosphorus can become locked away and harder for plants to access.

🦠 Microbial Activity
Healthy soil is alive! Beneficial microorganisms responsible for breaking down organic matter and cycling nutrients are influenced by soil pH. Maintaining the right balance encourages a thriving soil ecosystem.

🌸 Plant Growth
Most garden plants perform best in a slightly acidic to neutral soil range, generally around pH 6.0–7.0. However, every plant has its preferences — understanding your soil helps you create the conditions where your plants can truly thrive.

🌱 Soil Health
Balanced soil pH contributes to improved soil structure, drainage, water movement, and root development — all essential foundations for strong, healthy growth.

Great gardens start with great soil. Before you add more fertiliser, find out what your soil is telling you!

🌱If your looking for more detailed soil testing you can try:

Eurofins APAL test is about $140 and the results are fairly easy to interpret. They have labs in Victoria as well as other states.

Another option is EAL (part of Southern Cross University) based in NSW. This is the speaker from the national conference.

Dear Dahlia Diary:

Few dahlias have earned the admiration and enduring respect of Sylvia Craig Hunter.

Hybridised in Australia in 1995 by renowned breeder Noel Towns, this award-winning Medium Formal Decorative dahlia has become one of the most celebrated cultivars in Australian horticulture. Revered by flower farmers, florists, exhibitors and collectors alike, Sylvia Craig Hunter is instantly recognisable for her extraordinary painterly blend of colour, exceptional stem strength and vigorous, upright growth. Wander through a field in full bloom and, more often than not, the flower standing proudly above the rest will be Sylvia Craig Hunter.

Her influence extends far beyond the show bench. Sylvia Craig Hunter has become a cornerstone of the Bracken breeding program, where she is recognised as a parent of the outstanding Bracken Sarah, herself one of Australia’s most admired modern cultivars. Such is Sylvia Craig Hunter’s quality that she has amassed countless championship titles over the decades, cementing her place as one of the great exhibition dahlias of her generation.

Like many of his finest introductions, Noel Towns chose to name Sylvia Craig Hunter after a real person from his life—a tradition embraced by many heritage dahlia breeders, whose cultivars often carried the names of family members, friends and respected local identities. It is a reminder that behind every great flower is a deeply personal story.

Noel Towns belonged to what many regard as the golden era of Australian dahlia breeding, when breeders pursued the ideal Formal Decorative bloom with uncompromising dedication. The elegance, symmetry and refinement achieved during that period continue to influence dahlia breeding today, and few cultivars embody that legacy more completely than Sylvia Craig Hunter.
