The question I get asked more than any other: what grade should I actually start with?

Honest answer: High Grade. Snap-fit, forgiving, genuinely good detail for the price, and if it doesn't go how you hoped, you're not out much.

Real Grade looks incredible but the engineering is fiddly for a first build. Master Grade is a great second or third kit once you've got a feel for how these things go together. Perfect Grade is a project, not a starting point.

What was your actual first kit? And would you point a beginner at it again?

Bandai just revealed a kit in a line that's only had two others, ever.

The MGEX Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam was revealed on livestream this week. MGEX sits above Master Grade, Bandai's most premium and most complex line. It's set for March 2027 at 26,400 yen in Japan. Australian pricing isn't locked in yet.

Honest take though:- the last MGEX was the Strike Freedom. Four years waiting for the third kit in the line, and it's Strike Freedom again with new wings. I'd say someone at Bandai is after a bit more return out of moulding they've already paid for. Wearing my shop-owner hat, fair enough, I understand the decision. But for the builders who actually keep the whole thing going, I can see this landing as a bit of a let-down. You waited four years for this line to move, and it moved half a step.

Reckon it'll still fly off shelves in March 2027 all the same.

So what's the verdict, is Mighty Strike Freedom different enough to earn the badge?

Lost a part halfway through a build?

What happens next depends more than you'd think on where you bought the kit.

It happens to everyone eventually. you force that part just a fraction too much, a piece pings off the sprue and vanishes into the carpet, or a moulding defect means a part just isn't right. It's a normal part of this hobby, not rare bad luck.

Here's the honest bit. If you bought that kit from one of the big department stores, the toy aisle isn't set up to chase down a single missing runner from a manufacturer in Japan. It's not a knock on them, it's just not what that part of their business does. You'll likely be told to keep your receipt and hope for the best.

A dedicated hobby retailer is a different story. We're set up to actually chase it. When something's genuinely missing or defective, we log it with photos, forward it to our wholesaler within 24 hours, and they deal directly with Bandai to track the part down. It takes a while, realistically 6 to 8 weeks, because it's coming from Japan. But it gets sorted.

So if a kit's missing a part, go back to wherever you bought it first. If that's us, it's free and we'll sort it. If it's somewhere else, there's usually still a path, it just might cost a little and take some patience.

Sometimes saving a few dollars up front doesn't turn out to be the bargain it looked like.

Ever had to chase down a missing part? How'd it go?

The full 0083 Gundam Development Project just landed in the same week.

Master Grade Gundam GP01, GP02A and GP03S all came in from Japan together. I don't get to say that often, the Development Project trilogy arriving as a set rather than trickling in one at a time.

They landed alongside MG Crossbone Gundam X-1 Full Cloth & Barbatos, HG Seed & IBO kits plus HGUC Unicorn Phenex Destroy Mode Narrative Ver.

Stock on a few of these is thin already. GP01 in particular is down to the last one.

Have a look through the Master Grade range while they're up:- https://mechaexpressaustralia.com.au/collections/bandai-master-grade-gundam-mg

Awesome kit. Definitely not for beginners. Incredible amount of detail - mostly covered by armour. Phenomenal amount of interlocking parts for the motorized sections. The moulding is mostly very good but some minor flaws. Big parts, so nubs and seam lines are also big. Built quick with just nippers and a hobby knife but would definitely benefit from time spent sanding and painting. Some parts were supplied pre-painted and some had the metallic fleck in the plastic. Picture doesn't do it justice.
