Dear Smoothy,
Mate… I miss you every day, but today especially. It’s your birthday.
I’ve spent the last few weeks travelling through the Territory, heading back through old places, old roads and old memories, and I’ve been thinking a lot about home. About belonging. And about the people we meet along the way who somehow get written into the map of our lives.
Some people pass through and leave scars. Others leave stars… little points of light you find yourself navigating by years later.
You were one of those.
You weren’t polished or trying to impress anybody. You were just fu***ng real. Loud shirts, that old F-truck, black coffee or a rum, a yarn on the verandah, or left of field joke when someone probably needed it most… and those bloody big wrap you up and make you laugh hugs.
This trip has reminded me just how many incredible, raw, real humans are scattered across this country that i am blessed to know. But there are some people you simply never forget. Not because they were perfect, but because they left something behind in you. A saying, a story, a laugh you can still hear, or a different way of looking at the world.
Maybe that’s what legacy really is. Not how much money we made or what we owned. It’s the pieces of us that keep living in other people, even when we are no longer here.
And mate, you’ve left plenty.
Every time someone checks on the bloke who’s gone a bit quiet. Every time we sit down for a yarn instead of assuming “she’ll be right”. Every time we choose people over possessions, or sit around a fire with good people, and realise we’re richer than we thought… there’s a little bit of you there.
Maybe that’s why these letters have been sitting in my head for so long. Some conversations don’t finish just because somebody isn’t here to hear them anymore.
So every now and then I’m going to write to you. About life, the road, the people I meet and the things I’m learning. Probably plenty of things you’d tell me to stop overthinking too! Youd tell me to "Just send it Jessie, you got this, don't give up!"
Because if your story leaves anything behind, I hope it reminds us to "check our mates". Don’t assume the loud one is okay. Don’t assume the strong one doesn’t need asking. Call them. Sit beside them. Have the coffee. Listen to the yarn. Give the bloody hug. And live every day like its your last. To the FULL like Smoothy did.
I’ve realised something travelling these roads, Smoothy. We don’t necessarily remember people for what they achieved.
We remember how it felt to know them.
And knowing you left one hell of a mark.
Happy birthday, mate. Wherever your signal reaches these days, I hope there’s an old truck, a decent view and an icy cold bevvie waiting for you.
Anyway mate… just checking in.
You on channel? 📻
Big hugs,
Jessie x
