🌱 IN THE PADDOCK | Spring pasture planning starts now

Spring growth might still feel a little way off, but the decisions made now can have a big influence on pasture performance over the coming months.

Before applying fertiliser, take the time to review:

🌱 Which paddocks performed well last season—and which struggled?
🌱 What are your soil test results telling you?
🌱 Which nutrients are actually limiting growth?
🌱 How much feed will you need to meet livestock demand?
🌱 Are you maintaining existing pasture or trying to increase production?

Fertiliser delivers the best value when it is matched to your soil fertility, pasture type and production goals. Applying nutrients without knowing what the paddock needs can mean unnecessary expense—or missing the nutrient that is genuinely holding growth back.

How are current conditions influencing feed availability and livestock requirements over the coming months?

As pasture growth slows through winter, livestock energy requirements can increase, particularly for young, pregnant and lactating stock. If feed quality and quantity don't meet those requirements, livestock can quickly lose condition and productivity can be affected.

For producers with cows due to calve this winter, now can be a useful time to reassess body condition and feed budgets. Once cows enter early lactation, energy demands rise sharply, making it more difficult and costly to regain lost condition.

A few seasonal reminders worth keeping in mind:
✔ monitor livestock condition regularly
✔ review feed budgets and expected feed availability
✔ plan supplementation early if required
✔ prioritise stock with higher nutritional needs, including pregnant and lactating animals.

Preparing for the winter feed gap can help maintain livestock condition, productivity and welfare through to spring.
