Two saws. One number you need to know.

Most plants have a saw quietly costing more than it makes. Swipe to see where the break-even line sits, then run the model on your own figures.

There is a version of survival that can look a lot like strategy.

More volume. Cheaper timber. Keep the plant busy and worry about margin later.

But buying cheaper is not the same as costing less.

Timber price is only one part of the cost of producing a truss. Operator hours, saw time, handling, waste and the capital tied up on your floor all matter.

The Truss Component Analysis puts numbers against those inputs to show what in-house cutting is actually costing your plant.

A cheaper stick may reduce the purchase price. It does not necessarily fix the cost structure behind production.

One changes what goes in.
The other changes the cost of what comes out.

Want to see where the difference sits in your plant?

We’ll run the model using your figures, with an NDA in place before anything is shared.

If your business is not going well right now, what are you actually going to change?

Plenty of plants doing it tough are not short of work. They are short of margin on the work they already have.

Some of that margin is in your cutting. Every web, creeper chord, nog and block cut on your floor carries an operator, a shift, a running cost, and infeed that ends up as waste you pay to remove. It never shows as a line item, which is why it has survived every cost review you have done.

Plants that supplement keep cutting their core requirements on the equipment they already own, and let the smaller components arrive production ready. Same output. Less spent getting there.

27 years of pre-cut componentry, and every plant that made the change has come out ahead.

One change. No capital.

Some conversations are worth making time for.

R U OK? Day was last week, but with different rosters, we wanted to make sure everyone at Programmed Timber had the opportunity to be part of the conversation.

So, this morning, we put the kettle on, shared some morning tea and brought the team together.

The food was only a small part of it. What really mattered was reminding our people that they, and their families, have access to confidential wellbeing support when they need it.

We also talked about looking out for one another.

If someone at work seems a little quieter than usual, check in. Ask the question. And if you’re the one carrying something, talk to a colleague, a manager or someone you trust. You don’t have to carry it on your own.

Looking after our people means more than physical safety. It means looking after mental wellbeing too.

To our team, thank you for looking out for one another. 💛

And to anyone reading this today: Are you OK?

43% of the pieces in your trusses are webs.

Not in some plants. In effectively all of them.

That number comes out of the Truss Component Analysis dataset, built from a large number of plants over a long period. Plant to plant, state to state, saw to saw, it barely moves. It is not a measure of how well your plant is run. It is a characteristic of what a truss is.

Now put it next to the timber.

Webs average 1.090m against 2.590m for chords, so they are only about a quarter of the volume moving through your saw. But they take roughly 703 cuts per nominal cubic metre. Chords take around 265.

A quarter of your timber. Close to half your cuts.

Add creeper chords, cut to pitch and up-cut, and short components account for around two thirds of the cutting off little more than a third of the timber.

That is where your saw time goes. Not into the volume. Into the repetition.

So what happens when that share of the cutting arrives production ready instead?

One plant's real numbers returned a potential annual advantage of $748,171 from a single saw. Every plant is different, which is why the model runs on yours.

Your pieces per shift. Your ratios. Your rates. Your waste.

Let us run it.

Wood fibre utilisation is not a slogan to us. It is the entire business.

Australia's plantation forests keep growing and keep supplying, framing an average home every 150 seconds. They will not keep pace. Projected demand for sawn softwood by 2050 runs well ahead of what this country is on track to grow. You can manufacture a product. You can't manufacture a forest.

So, every length cut short on a plant floor comes out of a supply that is already short. Using this resource properly is not a sustainability line. It is arithmetic.

Twenty-seven years of it. Millions of components. That is Programmed Timber.

If you believe in building with timber, believe in using it properly.

Saws cost a lot of money. Some cost even more.

We support the purchase of a saw. A good linear saw earns its place in a good plant. But buying it does not deliver an automatic advantage.

The thinking goes that cutting everything in house is where the return lives, right down to the webs, creeper chords and blocks cut from higher cost infeed. Here is the question that should come first. Does all of that cutting need to be automated, or could some of it be eliminated?

Plants that supplement keep their core requirements on the saw they invested in, while the smaller componentry arrives production ready. Those cuts still happen, just not on their saw, not on their shift, and not at their cost.

Using one plant's real data, our Truss Component Analysis identified a potential annual advantage of $748,171 from a single saw.

"If I was driving the forklift, she was cutting wood. If I was cutting the wood, she was driving the forklift."

That's Warwick Drysdale on the early days of Programmed Timber. End of 1999, an empty factory unit at Seven Hills. No machinery. No timber. No guarantees. Just Warwick and his wife Helen, and complete faith in each other.

27 years later, more than half a billion timber components manufactured. A zero wood waste site. A business built on family, grit and a refusal to settle for "good enough."

"We'd rather innovate than imitate."

Proud to see Warwick and Helen's story shared by the National Timber & Hardware Association. Search 'Built from Scratch, Driven by Purpose' on ntha.com.au to read the full story.

They're not cheaper because they're desperate. They're cheaper because they can afford to be.

There is a plant in your region winning work at prices you think are impossible. You have called it margin dumping. You have called it buying the job.

Here is the version nobody wants to hear. They supplemented their cutting with pre-cut components, dropped their true component cost, and the savings have been compounding ever since. They are not throwing margin. They are protecting it.

Complaining about the plant down the road is not a strategy. Understanding their numbers is.

Before you blame their price, understand yours.

The biggest myth about supplementing is that you give up control.

You don’t.

The specification is yours. The tolerances are yours. The standard is yours.

What changes is who carries the repetitive cutting. Here at Programmed Timber, that work is backed by scanning, grading and precision machining designed to deliver repeatability at industrial scale.

Every component starts with your specification and ends production-ready, checked on the way through and ready for jigging and plating.

You keep control of the spec. We carry the cutting.

Off the truck. Into production. Into the press.
