HISTORY...
LOCATED IN THE SANDRINGHAM BEACH PARK
The Sandringham Band Rotunda, on the foreshore at the end
of Melrose Street, was erected in 1926 to replace the original
Rotunda on the same site, built in 1908. The present Rotunda
contains a drinking fountain that was a gift to the people of
Sandringham from Dr Thomas Garnet Leary, a well known local
medical doctor who was very active in the community.
The Rotunda was designed by Sandringham’s first City Engineer,
William Sunderland, who pioneered the use of reinforced
concrete for all types of construction. It was a big project in 1926
and, when completed, band recitals became a popular feature
on Sunday afternoons during the summer months. The 46th
Battalion Brass Band and the Sandringham Boys’ Band were
regular performers....Courtesy of the SANDRINGHAM and DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY at 15 Melrose Street, Sandringham

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED with SYC set to welcome the world’s best J/24 sailors to Melbourne in Oct/Nov 2026 as host of the Epigen J/24 World Championship 2026, one of the most respected and competitive keelboat championships on the international sailing calendar. The regatta will bring together elite crews, national and international competitors and supporters from across the globe to compete on the waters of Port Phillip Bay, reinforcing Melbourne’s reputation as a world-class sailing destination and showcasing Sandringham Yacht Club’s proven capability in delivering major international events.
This will be a mighty series, and we estimate 150-300 extra daily visitors in Sandy Village to enjoy our chilled village vibe, first-class library, accommodation, florist, cafes, restaurants and bars, a supermarket, music shop, gift shops, homewares and galleries, beauticians, hairdressers, health and allied services, pharmacy and legal practitioners - with world-class street art, by glorious coastal beach walks and beaches, and only 30min from the Melbourne C*D
