Pattern Native

Pattern Native is a luxury homewares and stationery brand, created by Tasmanian artist Danielle Black. Danielle’s original illustrations showcase the unique beauty of our native and endemic flora and fauna, such as our beloved Fagus and Forty Spotted Pardalote. These illustrations adorn a bespoke range of Tasmania-inspired stationery, accessories and homewares.

Their flagship range is their best selling linen-cotton blend art tea towels, loved by tourists and locals alike. They’re soft, absorbent and can actually be used to dry dishes and polish wine glasses. You’ll be sure to find a design to match your kitchen.

Danielle is determined to keep manufacturing in the state, so when you purchase a Pattern Native product you are supporting
small Tasmanian businesses and makers.

Our friends from Maclean Bay Wines are this month’s product highlight.

Maclean Bay Vineyard is a single vineyard around two hectares in size and just ten minutes north of the Bicheno town centre. The bay in front of the vineyard is known as Maclean Bay and its beautiful, untouched waters are visible from the vines.

The long growing season and cool nights enable the grapes to ripen gradually, giving slow sugar and flavour development. The rich clay-based soil in which the vines grow is perfect for viticulture.

Maclean Bay Wines began as a hobby for Scott and Sonia which has now developed into a thriving grape growing and wine producing business. Most weekends Scott and Sonia can be found tending the vineyard, pruning, training vines, netting and handpicking grapes or winemaking depending on the season. Both work in other employment but their passion for viticulture and wine is resulting in producing award winning Pinot Noir, Pinot Rose’ and Sparkling Rose’. All their wines are estate grown and are small batch wines.

Very soon they are hoping to open a little cellar door for visitors following the east coast wine trail, to be able to call in to do a wine tasing and vineyard tour.

Hillwood Whisky

Hillwood is a contemporary whisky, made in the tradition of Scottish single malt but given a distinctive edge from the wild Tasmanian landscape and their artisanal family approach. From grain to glass, their releases are 100% made by hand in fact, they are one of a few select distilleries who create everything from scratch, each step of the way. They mill onsite, create the mash, ferment, distil, barrel age and bottle all on their Hillwood property. Their water is tapped from a natural Permian age glacial spring and is the heart of the developing spirit. Full of essential minerals, the water is gently filtered through glacial rock deposited over 250 million years ago.

Born and raised in Northern Tasmania, Paul Herron is the Master Distiller and head of the family, and Daniel, Joel and Oliver are the triplet sons, spurring along Paul’s creative practice and combining their skills to produce a whisky abundant in flavour and heart.

Their Ex-Oloroso Sherry Cask was the category winner for the Best Single Cask Single Malt in Australia at the World Whiskies Awards.

Manchild Brewing

Head brewer Joe is no stranger to craft beer having worked in and alongside the industry for the last decade. Manchild is St Helen’s own tiny craft brewery, offering a range of ales and lagers brewed with as many local ingredients as possible.

Not concerned with tradition they aim to experiment to produce a brew that is tasty, balanced and unique resulting in limited edition seasonal brews.

With their eye-catching designs and the high demand of the Snelens Export Lager, Binalong Pale Ale and Dangerous Derek West Coast Style IPA they decided to keep them around resulting in a limited core range. Binalong is brewed specifically to complement a feed of oysters, light, gentle bitterness and delicate fruitiness while Derek is an American style IPA with a Tasmanian twist.

Snelens is everyman’s beer, 100% Tasmanian ingredients made to appeal to everyone.
