Unsayable: A Life in Writing – Michael Cunningham
Review (USA) Library Journal by Peter Thornwell

It is rare for adults to recall events from their toddler years, which makes it fitting that Cunningham’s beautiful memoir of a writing life begins with a highly descriptive memory from when he was three. Is it truly a memory, or a seed of one, expanded by a brilliant novelist obsessed with words? In numerous brief chapters, Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist Cunningham (Day; The Hours) has created a collection of autobiographical short stories about the profundity and difficulty of capturing the world, a life, or a moment through the lens of his own experience. Simply put, it’s a masterclass in writing, but not dogmatic. He explores his youth, family, sexuality, and career with the same sense of wonder he brings to his fiction; he knows when to dive deep and expose himself emotionally, and when to hold back and consider the process rather than discuss others’ personal lives. Interspersed with quotes on life or craft from other writers, this is an exceptional look at one writer’s reckoning with the creative process and the human experience.
