Resolving problems through out your painting process.

It’s easy to lose your sketch while you’re painting, something you need to continually train yourself to check throughout your painting process. This is why standing back, checking your work, looking at it in a mirror or even taking a photo can help you to see more, by separating yourself from it.

Having a clear reference also helps and looking at this just as much or more while you are working.

With this piece I’m working on - I could see it was off and I wasn’t able to get it back, I kept reworking it and ended up just continually fixing mistakes so I redrew the placement to give me a clear path.

The process!
A lot of students asked me about my professional painting steps. I use a lot of layers - a lot of marks and expressions and a lot of layers built with glazing - remember we are all different with our styles.

Here are some pics of a floral painting I’m near finished and the process it goes through along the way

From watery layers and muted colours on the background, to rapid mark making for the foliage to building values and enhancing colours in the peonies, notice with every step I go from dark to light, thin to thick and I’m constantly circling my focal point and coming back to it.

Lots of laughter and fun in our first ballpoint pen class, students learnt to transfer an image looking for shapes and negative space, learning to observe rather than drawing what you think it should be.
Look at this phenomenal work from students, it speaks volumes about how far they have come in their individual art journey.
