UPDATE:
As we are all coming to terms with the sad passing of Rufus, his condition know as NCPE; we’d like everyone to know that we did everything possible to help Rufus, and so dis all of you.
This is a condition that could happen to any of our dogs, it’s not the fault of his breeder (it’s not genetic) nor is it the fault of his owners, who had him for a short 2 weeks, had they had insurance this would not have kicked in to cover it.
D2DR is into it’s 11th year as a Registered Charity and whilst we’ve learned of many many illnesses and conditions, this was the first case.
Very sad indeed, his owners did the right thing and had him to Emergecy vet within a very quick time, we took over and he was given the very best of care for a condition that could be treated with a positive outcome, and you the community stood behind him.
Please read up and familiarise yourselves,

RUFUS UPDATE 3: 11.53am
Hi Everyone,
After a call from ARH critical care team this morning with Rufus showing a little more improvement from yesterday we received another call soon after.
Rufus passed away this morning shortly after his lung collapsed and despite all the critical care he was receiving & been given, it wasn't enough for his little body to keep fighting. He was in no pain & distress as he took his last earthly breath.
We took a chance to help Rufus because every dachshund deserves everything and more, but despite everyone's efforts, support, and love, Rufus decided it was his time to go.
Hold your puppies tight today as we collectively grieve for a sweet little boy who was loved beyond words.
Thank you, everyone, for your support & donations to give Rufus the chance to fight, we are so very grateful for the dachshund community's unwavering love.
Rest easy, darling boy ❤️
UPDATE ON RUFUS 2: 11.52AM
Hi everyone,
Another update from ARH, Rufus has shown a little more improvement from earlier this morning, however he is still very critical.
I’d like to thank everyone for their donations and wishes, its outstanding to see a community of dachshund owners stand by this little chap and support him in every way possible.
The bottom line will be between $5000 - $6000 a day for at last another 48 hours and longer, whilst D2DR tries so very hard to care for all sick dogs in our care; its not a bottomless pit and we will need more ‘several thousands more’ to assist with Rufus’ huge medical expense.
I can only estimate it will be in excess of $25,000 so I’m begging you all to share, donate however little it is, to help us, our vet bills are huge as you can read in the post that our Treasurer put up a few days ago, D2DR are very transparent and have shared with you all as to our veterinary expenses for each year.
We do what other ‘rescues’ don’t and take on the sick needing surgeries, it is a promise we made, so I’m hoping we can raise more to help this little boy.
Thank you all again.

Good morning, everyone, its Ricky, at 3:30 am this morning I received a call from Dr Carissa that Rufus was struggling more with his breathing, it was decided at this point that he is intubated (a breathing tube inserted) and we would see how he would go, as his condition was grave.
At 6:30am Dr Clarissa called to say
Overall Lung function is poor; however, Oxygen and CO2 is acceptable and compatible with life, his B/P is Low – CO2 is very high and the guarded prognosis whilst they are not optimistic would not rule out that he might make it.
Whilst he is very critical and on life support and sedation, they started drugs to improve his B/P and he has youth on his side.
At this stage his lung function is not good but it is compatible with life.
He is not in any pain and is sedated and is under anaesthesia.
THE COST OF THIS IS $5000-6000 A DAY
He has a chance – let’s give it to him.
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts – I know Rufus has hundreds of people praying for him.
Donations however small all add up in the big picture.
RUFUS – PLEASE HELP US SAVE RUFUS 10-WEEK-OLD PUPPY
Hi from Ricky and the Team at D2DR
We desperately need your help, this afternoon we received a call from Animal Emergency, about a little 10-week-old puppy who was very sick, unfortunately his owners could not afford the thousands of dollars required to determine and save his life.
We were asked if he could be surrendered and D2DR take on his care. He was already in an oxygen chamber to assist with his breathing as he has severe respiratory distress.
He was transported by animal ambulance to Animal Referral Hospital in Brisbane this afternoon on oxygen.
The onset of his health issue started about 11 am this morning and his owners rushed him to AEC so no time wasted, we transported him by oxygen ambulance by 3:30pm.
The update from the Team at ARH, is they have him in a high oxygen chamber, they have managed to do an ultrasound of his chest which shows a lot of fluid, he was distressed so he has been sedated and they will try and do more diagnostics as the night goes on.
He may need to be intubated, he may need blood transfusion, we are uncertain at this stage, however we have been quoted $3000 till the morning.
So, we are appealing to you all if you could assist us in raising some funds, as potentially we are looking at a huge vet bill of many thousands of dollars over the next few days.
At this stage ARH have not been able to determine his condition, without further diagnostics during the night.
All we can do at this stage is pray for him, knowing he’s in the very best place he can be and that he has the support of all the Dachshund community behind him with prayers and donations.
If you can spare anything at all, please help us and donate.
D2DR – NO DACHSHUND IS LEFT BEHIND
A very huge thank you to all of you.
