There are moments in life that remind you success isn’t always measured by a trophy.
Being nominated for a Blak Excellence Award in the Creative Artist category is something I’ll carry with me for a long time. While I didn’t take home the award, being recognised alongside so many talented and inspiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creatives is something I’ll treasure for a long time. To simply be considered was a reminder that every late night, every market, every painted piece, and every story shared through my art is making an impact.
Tonight, I had the privilege of celebrating alongside my mum and my partner, Keni. Success is never achieved alone, and I’m so grateful to have people beside me who believe in me, even when I doubt myself. Behind every small business, every creative idea, and every dream is a village of people who believe in you, and I’m so thankful for mine.
This year’s celebration also marked 50 years of NAIDOC nationally and 25 years of NAIDOC on the Sunshine Coast. To stand in a room filled with so many inspiring First Nations people—artists, leaders, Elders, businesses, and community members—was incredibly humbling. Our culture has endured, adapted, and continued to thrive through generations. Nights like tonight are a beautiful reminder of the strength, resilience, and brilliance of our mob.
I left the evening feeling incredibly proud of my mob. Proud of our resilience, our creativity, our strength, and the way our culture continues to thrive despite everything we’ve overcome. Our stories are still being told, our languages are still being spoken, and our art continues to connect people in ways words sometimes can’t.
Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners—you are so deserving, and your work continues to inspire our community.
Tonight reminded me that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, and I’m so proud to be walking this journey while celebrating the oldest living culture in the world.
What a privilege it is to be part of something so much bigger than myself. 🤍
