Got an email from a customer disappointed her personalisation faces outward.

We’ve workshopped it. We’ve assessed the situation. The personalisation is, in fact, meant to face the world.

When we started out we bought into the idea that owning a business meant more presence, more control, more of the good stuff with our kids. And nobody corrected us. The small business dream gets sold with a lot of freedom attached to it and not nearly enough honesty about what you actually give up.

Because the reality is you are still missing things. The random Tuesday assembly. The sports carnival. The small unremarkable moments that your kids clock even when you think they do not. You trade one set of constraints for another and on some days the guilt of that is genuinely loud.

What keeps you going has to be bigger than flexibility. It has to be a passion for what you are building that runs deep enough to make the hard days worth it.
