1. Preparation and Safety

• Clear the room: Move furniture out or cover it with drop sheets. Remove pictures, switch plates, and wall fixtures.
• Clean the surface: Wash down dirty or greasy areas using a sponge and sugar soap or water. Let the wall dry completely.
• Protect yourself: Put on safety glasses and a dust mask or respirator.

2. Filling Imperfections

• Patch holes and cracks: Use an appropriate filler for plaster or flexible filler for gaps. Overfill slightly as filler shrinks a bit when it dries.
• Let it dry: Allow the filler to cure completely according to the product instructions before sanding.

3. Choosing the Right Sandpaper Grit

• For general painted walls: Use 120-to-180 grit sandpaper for light scuffing and smoothing.
• For glossy paint: Start with 80-to-120 grit to break down the sheen so the new paint can grip.
• For fresh plaster or filler: Use a finer grit (180-to-240 grit) to blend patches smoothly without gouging the soft material.

4. Sanding Technique

• Use light pressure: Let your hand sander, pole sander, or electric sander do the work. Pressing too hard can gouge the drywall paper or plaster.
• Work in sections: Divide the wall into manageable zones (top, middle, and bottom).
• Edge carefully: Use a hand sanding block or sponge in corners and near skirting boards to avoid damaging adjacent trim.
• Check your work: Use a bright portable work light held close to the wall angle to reveal hidden shadows and ridges.

5. Post-Sanding Cleanup

• Wipe down the dust: Remove fine dust with a damp sponge, soft cloth, or duster before rolling your primer.
• Prime the surface: Apply a quality sealer-undercoat like Haymes Ultraseal Primer Sealer Undercoat to seal patches and create a uniform base for your topcoat.
