Caps, caps & more caps! But you wouldn’t want these!

Re capping vintage speakers is very important & we spend lots of time on this. Just a small example of what we have removed recently. In fact just finished re capping a nice pair of Rogers LS6, each box had 6 & some high values too that had to be ordered in especially for this job. Wharfedale Laser 130 re capped last week, part way through a pair of Celef Monitors with more waiting.

Just Very Cool with wonderful puppy eyes😍 How about this one for Father’s Day?

Glorious restored vintage JVC Integrated Amplifier model JA-S55 circa 1978. With the rare original Instruction Book.

JVC is not short for Just Very Cool but it might as well be!

Another great example from the Golden Era of HiFi. The big prominent power meters are impossible to ignore & are an iconic styling feature from this highly regarded era. Plus brushed alloy face plate, machined alloy k***s that reflect light like HiFi jewellery! Made In Japan build quality ensures this should last for years!

With 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms you get plenty of power to drive most speakers. Note, not suitable for hard to drive inefficient speakers, this being the only down side.

This is a superb example, cleaned & detailed with a freshly repainted cover. Even the stainless steel retaining screws have been polished. The back is just as clean too. Before all this as we always do this amp was professionally serviced by one of highly capable technicians.

This is not a common model & to confirm this we have sold many of the lower level variants over the years but not this one.

This one is a beauty!!

Stunning restored vintage NAD Stereo Receiver model 7045 circa late 1970’s. This is the very rare silver face version making it quite special. If you google this model you will mostly see the black version & these seem to have cabinets wrapped in black vinyl. I think the silver face, woodgrain wrap looks more premium.

Style wise & build quality wise a long way from what they were doing in latter years. From what we have seen/serviced over the years build quality dropped away dramatically as it did with many other manufacturers facing cost pressures due to changing market conditions.

This one wasn’t a budget model & a such it is well featured including 2 x phono inputs, a very rare inclusion for receivers! Plus 2 x tape inputs & fuses for speaker protection. Plus a subsonic filter & high filter! Weighing in at 13.5 kgs the 7045 is no lightweight. With a typical for the 1970’s understated power output of 45 watts per channel, filling most rooms with sound won’t be a challenge for this receiver.

A great component to form the basis of a classic Hifi system for your dad for Father’s Day.

Professionally serviced, & once it came back we also replaced the original vinyl wrap. Unfortunately the original material had shrunk so reluctantly we had to replace this.

What an iconic combo! Legendary Japanese & English made HiFi.

Mint restored vintage Technics Direct Drive turntable model SL-120 circa 1974 fitted with an equally legendary SME 3009 tone arm. With the “cherry on top”, the original manuals!

Some months ago we sold a stunning SL-120 with books as well, this one sold before it hit the shelf. Remarkably we have managed to get our hands on another stunning example!

The SL-120 was the SL-1200 for audiophiles! The original SL-1200 arm was possibly the weak link in the deck so by buying an SL-120 & fitting the SME, this deck went to another level. Matching rock solid quartz locked platter speed with an audiophile grade arm you had a serious top level HiFi grade turntable.

This combination is steeped in history, a few years earlier Technics invented the Direct Drive system, no more belts to replace & improved wow & flutter! So good was the Direct Drive system that other manufacturers introduced this drive system to their ranges as soon as they could. JVC, Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui, Luxman, Denon to name a few.
SME arms were the go to choice for many audiophiles wanting to upgrade their turntables & as such were huge sellers. During the mid/late 1970’s I remember looking at pictures of an SME arm falling deeply in love with this gorgeous shiny work of art & desperately wanting one, however I didn’t have a turntable let alone a HiFi system at that stage! Dreaming big by a penniless teenager, relatable by many I suspect!

Overall it is very hard to buy a turntable new nowadays that has so much history or engineered to the same standards. Sure some legacy brands have come back but they have no real links to the quality products the original company made many years ago. Here’s looking at you Lenco!

Ultimately clever marketing is no substitute for quality engineering!

Beautiful restored & iconic vintage Yamaha Stereo Amplifier model CA 1000 circa 1973.

Here is another fabulous TOTL model from the Golden era of Hifi! The CA 1000 was quite an advanced amplifier when it hit the market in late 1973.

It is pretty obvious where the inspiration came from for Yamaha’s recent models. When you consider the build quality (Made in Japan) including real alloy k***s, superb timber case as standard & the feature set I will always take this classic over a new one.

Famous for offering Class A as a switchable option, an audiophiles dream! Fifteen watts per channel in Class A & up to 70 watts per channel in Class AB.

Typical of a TOTL model you did get a lot for your money. Two x Phono inputs including MC, 2 x Aux inputs, 2 x Tape inputs, Pre out/Main in & connections for 3 speaker pairs! On the front panel you had the option of Tone Defeat & switchable Treble & Bass frequency points, Stereo mode options, High & Low Filters also with switchable frequency points. Finally Yamaha’s unique variable loudness control.

In typical Yamaha tradition this was an amplifier made for the true HiFi enthusiast. By one of the best in the business!

As always this one has been fully serviced by one of our professional technicians who also fitted a new modern power cable.

Cleaned & detailed, vents sanded back & repainted, cabinet oiled improving the richness of the original veneer colour.

Rare restored vintage Kenwood Stereo receiver model KR 7400 circa 1974. In beautiful condition!

What an impressive receiver as expected for a near top of the line model from the Golden era of HiFi.

Well featured with superb build quality, from a time when Kenwood were at the top of their game. Over shadowed by the better known brands like Marantz, Sansui & Pioneer, however this model offers sound quality at least the equal & arguably in a better package.

Producing an impressive 63 watts per channel the KR 7400 can handle most speakers.

Very well featured too, including 2 x phono, 2 x tape inputs, 4 channel input/outputs, switched/unswitched inputs, connections for 3 pairs of speakers, midrange tone control, stereo option modes, high & low filters & to cap it all off, the text on the face plate is engraved into the face plate itself. That little bit of extra effort showed they really cared about what they were offering the public. Plus the fake timber side panels added some class.

A very impressive vintage receiver & you definitely cannot buy anything new like this now!

Time for something a little different! Rare Vector Research Integrated Amplifier model VA 1400 circa 1984.

A compact unassuming slimline amplifier that packs a serious punch. My wife’s was helping unload some Hifi at a one of our techs locations. Looking for the lightest component she picks up the Vector Research & goes “whoa this little box is heavy😬”, it caught her by surprise!

Packing 2 x transformers adds considerable weight. The 2 transformers support dual mono circuitry which is typically found in high end integrated & high end power amplifiers. High current too, meaning it can handle challenging speakers comfortably. A real surprising find in an understated compact ampflier like this. Ironically it is similar in construction to certain NAD & Proton slimline amplifiers.

Power output 100w x 2 into 4 ohms or 65w into 8 ohms.

Founded in the USA, Vector Research weren’t around for long so their products don’t carry the price premium that many other brands do, representing excellent value.

Superb restored iconic vintage Teac 4 Channel Simul-Sync Reel to Reel Player model A-3340S circa 1974 with rare Owners manual!

Iconic due to the fact that this deck helped launch the careers of many aspiring musicians due to the fact they were able to record multi track music in their own home! All musicians had to start somewhere however access to a professional studio for a penniless musician was only a pipe dream. Produce a demo tape at home & then hope that someone in the right places would notice & give you your big break then the money would come for studio time.

Music as we know it made significant advances when tape became the format studios used to capture an artists performance. Initially single track, then 2 track (stereo) & so on it went by the 1960’s multiple tracks could be recorded. The Beatles were famous for pushing the boundary’s (eg Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band).

This is a serious semi professional deck & what a great package from a renowned tape deck manufacturer. Multi reel size capability, 10.5” & 7”, high speed 15 ips & standard 7.5ips. Four track, 4 channel multi channel system & pièce de résistance, Simul-Sync allowing users to monitor recorded tracks & then adding their own tracks creating multitrack music without the need of a professional studio. A break through for aspiring musicians.

A massive & impressive centrepiece this beauty comes in at a substantial 22 kgs so you won’t be sneaking this one home hoping your wife won’t notice it! It shouts “look at me”!

This deck has been fully serviced including re capping, fitting a new idler wheel & also fitting a more common IEC C14 male inlet plug so you can use a standard power cable in case the original cable is lost. We will supply a brand new power cable as well. Replacing the rare 2 pin inlet plug is another example of the small things we do to make life easier for the new owner in the future.

Also supplied with the new reels pictured, genuine Teac hubs & most importantly, the genuine Owners manual!

After the large “are they real JBL’s” it’s time to go back to the future. No not a re release of a classic model but the real deal. Acoustic Research (AR) 7 - 2 way bookshelf speakers circa mid 1970’s in excellent original condition!.

Just like their later AR18 sibling the AR 7’s still impress today. Both are considered very desirable classic models.

Whenever I have these in stock I love embarrassing much newer speakers by comparing the mid 1970’s AR 7 to the newer speakers. Then watch the look of amazement on our customers face when the old speakers sound better than the newer model. That is not how it works, newer is always supposed to be better!

The next response is “I will take those”! So just like all the others we have had previously this pair didn’t last long! Now sold.

The cool retro style featuring genuine wood veneer with the original linen cloth covers & brass badges completes the package. So if sound quality doesn’t convince a customer then the aesthetics are hard to ignore.

Serviced including re capping & fitting banana plug speaker terminals. The foam surrounds on the woofers had clearly been replaced at some stage recently. Foam spec & quality was good so we didn’t change the surrounds.

Clean & detailed & sold with 6 months warranty.
