How Kikokuryu koi Develop 🐉

From Fry they are born black, then go a shade of dirty brown (this is where they get overlooked as ugly fish).
As they grow metallic lustre increases (for most)
Some will show red / orange patterns when young and as this example did dome hold it some will lose it completely.
They can also gain and lose black from changes in water temperature with seasons.
This is an example of 3 months, 6 months and 2 years.

How to grow koi fast 🐟🏆

Metallic doitsu koi are generally slow growing koi fish, breeders keeping koi based pattern quality rather than structure and inbreeding pay a large part in this.

In order to increase growth rates in our koi, we do the following ⬇️

(1) Keep the fastest growing fish always.
(2) No inbreeding lines, we would rather outcross with different suitable varieties to keep their genetics strong.
(3) Heated water year round,
Koi generally grow nothing at all over winter otherwise (yes its expensive)
(4) Always feeding more than 2 times per day, koi have no stomachs, they will not grow to their full potential unless fed more than once a day a high protein diet.
(5) Water changes, water changes remove toxic nitrate and organic waste from the water as well as remove growth inhibiting pheremones we recommend 20-30% weekly water changes on small or overstocked ponds and 5-10% on large established low stocked ponds.

Its something incredible when you have raised a koi from a fry to a full sized adult, this big kikokuryu girl is turning 3 at the end of the year and at over 60cm we are going to need a bigger tub!
For reference she has grown in a 2500L pond her whole life, no dam.

Thats genetics, warm water and a lot of food.
