What's the difference between 9k gold, 14k gold and 18k gold?

When designing a bespoke piece of jewellery, it's important to consider how this piece will fit into your life. If it's a piece of jewellery that you want to wear everyday, we recommend looking at having it made in 9k gold as it is quite durable and signs of wear won't appear as quickly over time. However, if you prefer a more "yellow" gold look (this applies to yellow gold pieces), we recommend looking at having your piece of jewellery made in 14k or 18k gold.

White gold on the other hand gets dipped in rhodium, so the colour difference is not as obvious as yellow gold, however the durability is applicable in the same way as yellow gold is.

Back in 2024 I had made these sapphire earrings and shortly after I also accidentally wiped my whole camera roll off my cloud storage and no longer have photos to show these beauties off 😭.

I was asked to create a set of Australian Patti Sapphire drop earrings, and this was also my first time setting stones (and despite my initial thoughts, it was much easier to do than I anticipated).

This gorgeous set of earrings are made in 18k yellow gold and took me a few days to make because I was insistent on making them immediately with gold instead of practicing with silver or brass and these turned out perfect (I am also a perfectionist and there was no way I was going to leave the bench until I was happy with them).

They’re one of my favourite pieces I’ve made to-date because they really challenged me (despite them looking so simple, I made all the finishes by hand) and I just adore the shade of the sapphires against the gold.

As someone who works on such a small scale, using the optivisor has to be one of the best investments I’ve made as it helps me see every little detail.

So today we’re unboxing a fresh set so I don’t have to borrow someone else’s when I’m at the bench 🤭

Happy September!

Those of you born in September are incredibly lucky to have (in my opinion) the best gemstone as your birthstone - Sapphires!!

I currently have a fair few sapphire pieces in the works for clients at the moment so I can’t wait to show those off when they’re done, but for now enjoy some pieces I’ve made in the past with sapphires, as well as some sapphires that I’ve just added to my collection!

I love sapphires because they come in a range of colours such as blue, pink, yellow, green, and even white! My favourite though has to be the Australian Parti Sapphire which has hues of greens, blues and yellows that can be seen from a single stone 💙💛💚

When hosting consultations I always get asked “what’s the difference between white gold and platinum?”

In my opinion, it comes down to lifestyle factors. If you are okay with having to take your white gold to the jewellery to be re-plated every year or so, then white gold is a way to go. Platinum doesn’t have any upkeep once the piece is completed, however it is a tougher metal to work with, so if you like small details on your jewellery pieces this is something to consider as it’s not a metal that allows for tiny details (or it definitely makes it trickier for our jewellers to work on)

Jewellery care 101 - how to clean silver

Some of you may notice that if you don’t wear silver for long periods of time, that it will oxidise. But lucky for you the way to clean it is simpler than you think (and you probably have everything you need right in your kitchen!)

Talon claws feature a pointed finish on the claw whereas round claws are small round points that hold the diamond/gemstone down. Both just as durable as one another, the main difference lies in how it makes the gemstone appear in the setting.

If you prefer a “more-gold” look, round claws are the way to go, otherwise talon claws show more of the stone (as there’s less gold to cover the top in one specific section, the gold is spread down and tapers at the end).
