Afghanistan produces a variety of hand knotted rugs but the most popular by far is the Khal Mohomadi syle floor rug.

The vast majority of these rugs are woven in Northern Afghanistan in and around the city of Kunduz by the Torkmans. Some are also made in Pakistan by Torkmans that have moved over the border.

They have a short pile height and they usually have a deep red ground colour with black or blue/black design features. They are predominately of geometric tribal design with the classic "Broken Branches" being the most popular.

They come in a wide variety of sizes from 50 x 100 cm right up to 300 x 400 and even larger.

A tough practical rug with a forgiving pallete that will provide years of service.
