Rick Owens, L’AI-JE BIEN DESCENDU?, 2007. Limited edition of 1,000. $1500 aud plus shipping.

From our curation of rare fashion books made in collaboration with

An excellent copy of the rare, first ever Rick Owens title, numbered 329 of 1000. All photographs by Rick Owens. Large format book with hardcover case binding, including original cloth wrap.

“I had originally intended to make a handbook for new employees to show them what the brand was about and what I wanted it to be. After compiling it, I thought maybe some of our clients might like it, too. The title was a quote from a famous Parisian showgirl named Cecile Sorel who used to say it to the audience after making her grand entrance onstage, descending a long staircase in a huge feather outfit. It means ‘How well did I descend?’ Taking it out of that context, I liked the ominous connotation. It was a wonderful exercise to isolate whatever I felt I did gracefully and eliminate whatever I considered awkward or unresolved. I wish it were as easy in real life. I wanted to examine what I’d done calmly, summarized. Im afraid that it was a very selfish indulgence.”

Visionaire 20 Comme des Garçons, 1997. Limited edition. $1200 aud plus shipping.

From a curation of rare fashion books made in collaboration with x

With this brilliant issue of Visionaire, Rei Kawakubo became the first guest editor for the publication. This copy numbered 1563 of 2800. Includes a small-format magazine (unopened), a real dress pattern printed on muslin (unopened) and large-format pages that pose questions to be answered by contributing photographers. Nearly all images were photographed in December 1996 and feature pieces from previous and then current Comme des Garçons collections.

“Rei opened up her archives and chose her favorite pieces for select photographers to reinterpret. It was exciting for us to see what a young photographer like Mario Sorrenti, then twenty-six, would do with fashion that dated as far back as 1982 (at which time he was only eleven years old). Philip-Lorca diCorcia, contributing for the first time, took a Comme des Garcons dress to the bustling streets of Hong Kong. Nick Knight mixed Comme with Alexander McQueen and created what turned out to be one of the most reproduced Visionaire images ever.”

Condition: Interior contents are in very good condition with light foxing. Wear to outer box including marks/stains and rubbing (please see images).

Coincidences: Photographs by Sarah Moon, 2001. First edition. $400 aud plus shipping.

From a curation of rare fashion books made in collaboration with x

Sarah Moon’s first major retrospective, a beautiful title bringing together her personal and seminal fashion work. Includes images created for designers such as Comme des Garçons, Chanel, Issey Miyake, Yoji Yamamoto, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler and Alexander McQueen. Published by Thames & Hudson.

“…Moon’s pictures transformed the image of femininity: ‘I allowed women to be themselves, without playing the game of performing.’ Her work has since appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Nova. Many of her photographs are created around intensely personal scenarios which she refines into taut compositions, recalling stills from silent movies. Her eye tends to catch at tiny visual ideas: the arc of a hip, the glint of skin, the modulations of light and shadow.

Arthur Elgort’s first comprehensive book, showing his world-renowned fashion imagery alongside his personal work. Introduction by Grace Coddington. Published by Steidl/Edition 7L. Signed by Arthur Elgort.

“The book spans Elgort’s five-decade career and illustrates his longevity as an emulated fashion photographer. His lively and casual shooting style is significantly influenced by a lifelong love of music and dance, particularly jazz and ballet.

Elgort’s 1971 debut in British Vogue created a sensation in the fashion world where his soon-to-be iconic “snapshot” style and emphasis on movement and natural light transcended norms of fashion photography. Elgort subsequently rose to fame working for such distinguished magazines as American, French and Italian Vogue, Interview, GQ, Life and Rolling Stone; and shooting advertising campaigns for fashion labels including Chanel, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent.”
