The cute print in this pic reminds me of a storybook we have. It’s about a family who are always in such a rush there’s no time to talk or play - until the afternoon an adorable sloth comes to stay. It’s a beautiful story about slowing down and enjoying the little things in life, a point we’ve heard countless times before but that’s because it’s true. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Taking the time to stop, breathe and just appreciate the world around us is so important. Not only does it help us as adults but to quote parenting educator Maggie Dent “we want our children to be able to manage living in our chaotic world and avoid becoming overwhelmed by the pace and business of modern life”. To teach children to slow down, we have to embody it. Easier said than done I know!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

FAQ: Hardwood vs. Softwood for Toys? 🌳⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When it comes to wood there are many different species, grades of quality and usage varies across industries but it’s typically classified into two categories; hardwood or softwood. There’s also a third category called manufactured wood which we’ll touch on separately.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The main advantage of hardwood is its high density, in turn making it more durable. It’s harder to cut but is less prone to dents, splintering and holds up well to wear and tear so most experts say hardwood makes better quality toys. It also has more textures, patterns and colours.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Softwood is less dense, less durable and easier to cut. Softwood can work well for larger toys but small pieces are prone to crack or splinter. Softwood is less expensive. It’s commonly mass-produced on tree farms and widely available for purchase.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hardwood makes high quality toys that are more likely to last but it’s not always black and white - hardwood costs more therefore toys made from hardwood also cost more. It also doesn’t mean softwood toys are low quality. For some the trade off is worth it - a less expensive toy made from a less expensive wood and for others the opposite is considered as an investment.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The majority of the world’s most well-known wooden toy brands use hardwood, especially common are beech, birch, and rubberwood but a few brands’ toys are made using softwoods, in particular pine, cedar and basswood. Some makers also use a combination for different components of the toy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Beech is the most available and accessible hardwood in the world and most importantly, the beech they’re made from is sourced from a country that makes sure the amount of wood used never exceeds the amount of wood growing to take its place. I’m constantly amazed when watching kids use their imaginations to build, invent, make-believe and create. When given free reign to play they’ll turn toys and other objects into anything they want them to be. It’s such a fun part of childhood. ✨
