🚨 PPWR Alert: Are you shipping in the EU market?

From 12 August 2026, the EU PPWR limits the amount of empty space in grouped, transport and e-commerce packaging to 50% maximum, including fillers such as paper cushioning, bubble wrap, air pillows and dividers.

Take the example below: the product occupies only 3% of the total box volume. The remaining space is filled with packaging material, despite the product not being particularly fragile.

📦 This type of packaging may soon become a compliance risk for companies selling into Europe.

Hi, I’m Renata Daudt, packaging materials engineer, founder of AWEN Packaging Consulting

I grew up in the lush south of Brazil with a biologist mum, a backyard compost heap and a box of recycled treasures I turned into games, gifts and DIY décor. My curiosity about materials and design began early and never really faded.

Having travelled to almost 50 countries, I paid close attention to how people use and dispose of packaging, how products are made, and how waste systems function. Seeing that level of variation up close shaped the way I think about design, responsibility and what good packaging should achieve.

After studying chemical engineering, I moved to Germany for a Master’s in fibre-based packaging engineering and continued working and researching across different regions. Those experiences deepened my interest in material behaviour and the real-world impact of packaging choices.

When I arrived in Australia in 2019, it became clear how complex and inconsistent recycling and packaging regulations can be. That pushed me to create something practical and supportive for businesses trying to make better decisions.

So I launched AWEN in 2020 to help brands navigate packaging with clarity, accuracy and confidence.

Today, I help companies design for circularity, meet regulations, reduce waste and communicate progress without slipping into greenwashing.

I’m also constantly improving my skills by travelling globally to learn about the latest technologies and innovations in the market, as well as conducting PhD research on circular materials for packaging.

🚨 12 August 2026: The first PPWR deadline is only 10 weeks away

Many companies are focused on the 2030 recyclability targets, recycled content requirements and reuse obligations.

But the reality is that the first compliance deadline arrives much sooner

From 12 August 2026, packaging placed on the EU market must be supported by:

📋 Declaration of Conformity (DoC)
📑 Technical Documentation demonstrating compliance
🏭 Manufacturer and importer identification
🔍 Evidence supporting sustainability and environmental claims
♻️ EPR registration and compliance obligations
⚠️ Compliance with packaging minimisation requirements
⚠️ Compliance with restrictions on PFAS in food-contact packaging and heavy metals limits

For many businesses, the challenge is not redesigning packaging overnight.
The challenge is having the evidence.
Can you obtain material composition data from suppliers?
Can you demonstrate compliance with PPWR requirements?
Can you substantiate every sustainability claim on your packaging?
Can you prepare a Declaration of Conformity for every packaging format placed on the EU market?
The companies that start collecting supplier data, reviewing packaging specifications and preparing technical documentation now will be far better positioned than those waiting for the 2030 deadlines.

The Circularity Gap Report 2026 is out, and I've been going through the numbers

The headline figure is a scary: €25.4 trillion lost every year to the way we currently produce, use, and dispose of materials.

That's nearly a third of global GDP, just gone and not through bad luck, but through a system that was never designed to hold onto value.

What struck me most is the scale of the economic loss sitting inside what we normally talk about as an environmental problem.

👉🏼 For every €3 of value created globally, around €1 disappears.

👉🏼 Only 6.9% of materials in the global economy come from recycled sources.

👉🏼 One third of all food produced never gets eaten.

The report calls this the Value Gap, its the difference between what our economy creates and what it actually keeps.

For anyone working in packaging, this matters. The materials we specify, the end-of-life decisions we make and the systems we design for, all of it sits inside this picture.

Just because a plastic bag says “REUSABLE” doesn’t mean it is.

A bag is only reusable if people actually reuse it.

I’ve seen many plastic bags carrying large “REUSABLE” logos that are used once and thrown away. The claim changes, but the outcome often doesn’t.

Let’s stop focusing on labels and start focusing on real environmental outcomes.

Honeycomb packaging doesn't get enough credit. It absorbs shock, cushions fragile products, and performs on par with styrofoam, but without the environmental baggage.

It's made from paper, it's lightweight, and most importantly, it's recyclable through standard kerbside collection.

Styrofoam is none of those things.

Brands moving away from expanded polystyrene often assume they'll have to compromise on protection, but honeycomb is the material that proves otherwise.

Still using styrofoam? There really is no reason anymore!
