Okay… confession time. 😂

I used to look at petrified wood and think, “It’s nice… but I don’t really get the hype.”

Compared to sparkly crystals, it can seem a little plain at first — but then you realise you’re looking at something that started as ancient wood and slowly became stone over millions of years.

And honestly… that completely changed it for me. 🖤

Now I love the patterns, the earthy colours, and the fact that every piece feels like a tiny piece of history.

Sometimes the crystals we overlook at first end up being the ones we appreciate the most. ✨

☁️✨ HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT — Today’s Australian Oddity

Some clouds hang overhead. Some look like the sky has suddenly grown hundreds of upside-down bubbles. 😂☁️

Australia gets mammatus clouds — unusual clouds that form as cool air sinks rather than warm air rising.

The distinctive rounded pouches hang from the underside of a larger cloud, giving the sky an almost lumpy, otherworldly appearance.

That’s particularly interesting because most clouds develop through upward-moving air. According to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, mammatus associated with thunderstorms form when cool air sinks from the higher parts of a cumulonimbus cloud.

They can also look absolutely spectacular around sunrise or sunset. Because the Sun is so low, its light can illuminate the hanging cloud pouches in intense orange and red shades. A photograph of mammatus clouds over Wentworth Falls in New South Wales was even selected for the Bureau’s 2026 Australian Weather Calendar. 🌅☁️

Mammatus are often associated with severe thunderstorms and atmospheric turbulence, although seeing them does not mean severe weather is necessarily occurring directly underneath you.

So if you ever look up after a storm and the entire underside of the sky appears to be covered in enormous hanging bubbles…

The clouds haven’t broken. They’re doing exactly what they’re supposed to do. 😂✨

🦔⚡ HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT — Today’s Australian Oddity

Echidnas already lay eggs, have spikes and eat with ridiculously long sticky tongues… but apparently that wasn’t strange enough. 😂

Echidnas can detect tiny electrical signals with their snouts. ⚡🦔

The short-beaked echidna has an electroreceptive system in its snout. According to the Australian Museum, echidnas have roughly 400–2,000 electroreceptors, which can detect very weak electrical signals.

Their relative the platypus takes this ability to another level, with around 40,000 electroreceptors in its bill, which help it detect the tiny electrical currents produced by the muscles of prey underwater.

Scientists believe electroreception has very ancient roots in monotremes. Research on a tiny monotreme that lived in Australia around 130 million years ago suggests it may already have possessed an electro-sensitive feeding system while searching for food in the dark polar forests that once covered southeastern Australia. 🤯

So an echidna wandering around with its nose pressed to the ground isn’t relying only on smell and touch…

It has a little bit of built-in electrical detection equipment too. 😂⚡

What an absolutely incredible day. 🥹💗 I went into my first market excited, nervous and having absolutely no idea what to expect… and I’ve walked away completely blown away by the love and support The Hidden Familiar received today.

To every single person who stopped at my stall, bought something, cracked a geode, played the claw machine, followed my socials, had a chat or simply came over for a look — THANK YOU. Every single bit of support meant more to me than you probably realised. 🥹🔮💎

The lovely lady from Celtic Stag stopped by The Hidden Familiar, purchased this gorgeous crystal piece from me… and then right there at the market transformed it into this incredible necklace! 😭✨

HOW AMAZING IS THAT?!

Seeing something that was sitting on my table this morning become part of another small business owner’s beautiful handmade creation just a few hours later was honestly so special. 💎🖤

She added the leather necklace, hardware and gorgeous rune detail, and suddenly my little crystal had a whole new life. I absolutely LOVE how it turned out!
