Some ideas to ensure your furry friend stays comfortable and safe this summer - and this weekend as things heat up in Australia:
π¦ Provide fresh, cool water:
Ensure your dog has constant access to fresh, cool water. Adding ice cubes to the water bowl keeps it cooler for longer and our dogs love to play with the ice.
β±οΈ Shade and Shelter:
Create a shaded area in your backyard where your dog can retreat from the sun. If you're at the beach or park, bring along a portable canopy or umbrella.
π Limit Exercise in Extreme Heat:
Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for walks and playtime in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
π΄ Cooling Mats or Pads:
Cooling mat are now available from most pet shops. These are designed to reduce heat and provide a comfortable surface for your pet to lie on.
π¦ Doggie Pool or Sprinkler:
Set up a small paddling pool or a sprinkler for your dog to play in. Many dogs enjoy splashing around in the water to cool off.
π§ Frozen Treats:
Make frozen treats like ice cubes with a bit of peanut butter, snacks or treats, or freeze your dog's favorite toys in water for a refreshing chew.
π¦ Wet Towels or Bandanas:
Dampen a towel or bandana with cool water and place it around your dog's neck. This helps cool them down as the water evaporates.
π₯΅ Avoid Hot Surfaces:
Asphalt, and sand can become extremely hot and burn your dog's paws. Stick to grassy areas or walk during cooler times of the day.
π Car Safety:
Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a short time. The temperature inside a car can rise quickly and lead to heatstroke.
π¦ Hydration on Walks:
Bring a portable water bowl and water on walks. Keep an eye on signs of dehydration, such as excessive panting or lethargy.
Every dog is different, and it's essential to pay attention to your pet's individual needs and preferences especially during extreme heat, which we are expecting today in many places in Australia. If you notice signs of heatstroke, such as heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, or difficulty breathing, seek veterinary assistance immediately.
