California: island or peninsula? Two details from 18th Century maps: Henri Chatelain's world map of 1719, one of the most decorated ever produced, shows an island, and the second, almost half a century later, a peninsula, from Samuel Engel's "Memoires et Observations Géographiques et Critiques…". Engel made an important contribution in establishing the existence of an Arctic passage between Asia and America. 4504770 & 5000483 at hordern.com From our latest catalogue, Geographies & maritime accounts from a private collection.

From a vividly dramatised account of life in the Queensland bush published in Geneva in 1868, by a Swiss settler and writer Edouard Marcet. The unusual illustrations are actually a series of mounted photographs of drawings, an very early example of the genre: only 200 copies are known to have been printed. From our latest catalogue a selection of voyage accounts to Australia from a private collection.

Views of Nootka Sound, Prince of Wales' Fort in Hudson's Bay, and detail of Aleuts in their canoe, from three great voyage books by George Vancouver, Samuel Hearne, and Frederick William Beechey; highlights in our latest catalogue: English voyages after Cook. Beechey's voyage in its remarkable binding was the copy of an important 19th Century woman collector and subscriber to voyage books, Eliza Giffard.
